Denali vs GL450

My niece just picked up a new, '08 Yukon Denali, nav, entertainment, 20" wheels MSRP $57K for $34k plus taxes and tags. Hard to see paying $20k more for GL even though it might be a preferable vehicle.

Would not touch a Denali with a ten foot poll.I do not care if it was twenty grand off. There is a reason they were discounting it. The dealers cannot give them away given the current gas situation. There is no comparison between a GL and a Denali.

We crossed shopped the Yukon Denali . Like it's twin the Escalade , didin't like the third row seat set up. Also, sleazy that you had to buy an Escalade to get xenon headlights.

You'd be surprised how many new Yukon Denalis ( new Suburbans and Tahoes ,too) there always are parked in front of the $10-20 million lakefront homes at Lake Tahoe. It's usually those or Range Rovers .
More of them than our fancy German SUVs in some of the Incline, North Shore and West Shore neighborhoods.

I would agree that the Denali has poor gas mileage. The GL450 mileage is better but not great. I prefer the "feel" of the GL to the Denali, but is not bad for a big SUV. In terms of power and by the numbers performance the Denali is about equal to the GL550 which is close to $40K more. Essentially we are talking free gas for for 5 years vs the 450 and over 10 years of free gas vs the 550 with the Denali. Preferences aside the Denali is a remarkable value vs the GL.

There is about 5K cash back from GMC going on on Yukons. But even with that getting close to 40% off is way out of the norm.

GL450 (Alabaster White/Black Interior)
Count me in on being skeptical of that Denali pricing, but if that price is for a new one that is a smoking deal. I owned a Denali a few years back (2002-2005) and really liked it. The 6 liter engine in them is really impressive but is real thirsty. Takes off like a rocket and can tow just about anything. With that said, there is a fundamental difference between a Denali and a GL. The Denali looks and drives like a truck while the GL drives like a car.

Well said BeanCounter. That is exactly what I love about the GL. It handles so well.

Pretty simple........the Yukon/Denaili/Suburban is built by GM with GM quality and engineering. The GL450 is built by Mercedes. I've owned both........and in this case you do get what you pay for.

I've owned 7 MBZ in past 23 years . But they all accumulate 2 inch thick repair folders . Oh well. I've got an appt for my 11 month old 2008 GL's 1 year servise which includes : rear hatch not latching ,latching but lights don't go out, latching but warning shows on display, check engine light off and on,creaking from right front axle (TSB) ,noises from airmatic front compressors ( was supposed to have been remedied with new design in late 2007 , but who knows if that worked ), rattle that won't go away in right rear area ,funky groaning/grinding/moaning noise at very low speeds from tranny when hot...there's more but I don't have the list in front of me.
That's par for the course and I keep buying the brand over and over anyway.

Ouch!! Yeah, I get your message BUT, honestly, I have not had one issue with my '07 GL450. Conversely, I had many with my Suburban and later my Yukon.

The repair folder for my '99 ML 430 was thick - I got the extended warranty and was so glad I did , but wasn't surprised 'cause it was second year of Alabama production . We also got an '00 E class wagon and I figured wouldn't need extended warranty on such a well developed vehicle made in the fatherland ..BIG mistake . Seems like every generation has more problems ,compared to my 80's/early 90s ones although MBZ is supposed to have improved its reliabilty starting with the recent S Class. Will be buying the factory extended warranty before the 12 month deadline next month - anyone know an internet MBZ dealer source who sells them cheap ?

(Some brands have dealers in middle of nowhere who sell factory ext warranties over the internet for 100-200 bucks over their cost . )

Denali is Gm and Mercedes is... mercedes.
Denali is not a bad truck! same with Tahoe but in a different class with the GL when it comes to quality, comfort and "bling". Anyway, the US vehicles are a bit cheaper than the european built (Merc, Audi, BMW) now so I would not blame anyone for choosing a Denali or other US company car specially when the deal is as good as in this case if the numbers truly are correct!

Yeah, love that GM axle technology--kind of like covered wagons going west.

Love that iron engine, too. Lots of 1955 technology there.

The only reason this vehicle is priced anywhere near the GL is the excessive labor costs.

absolutely right. why are we comparing Denali (non-luxury) with GL (Luxury). in that case i can compare Honda civic againest Merc C-class. and say why the hell i need to pay double for Merc C?

just my 2 cents...
