Negotiating on an '08 GL550: How much more aggressive can I be

- Dealer has one '08 GL550 left on the lot (silver w/black interior)
- Car is not used, but it does have close to 4,000 dealer miles
- Additional options: lighted door sills, Keyless Go, hitch
- Dealer is asking $71,800 (plus destination charge, tax, and license fee...which totals to $79k).

As best I can tell, this is a few thousand below invoice, but it also looks like there might be some manufactuer to dealer cash ($6k?) through Sept-08.

Is there legitimately room to negotiate on the price? If you were in my position, would you try and help the dealer preserve some margin on the selling price of the vehicle, but try and negotiate some dealer options (floor mats, child seat, extended warranty) at bargain-basement prices?

Also, 4k miles on a "new" car seems like a lot to me. How significant is this fact in this particular negotiation?

Thanks for any insights!

You can get a better price.

Take a look: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-...=p4506.c0.m245

Walk, and get him to lower that price.

The one on eBay has the RSE and iPod and lists for $82K+. You should be able to go to around $68-69K. As bigben says, make the offer and walk if he doesn't move from his $71K.

I would call that a used car. Even if it was a dealer demo, here in PA i don't think a car can have over 1,000 miles on it and still be "new". I wouldn't but this unless they were willing to offer a very good price AND a extended warranty free of charge.

Thanks for the helpful replies. The dealer held firm, so we walked away. The 4,000 miles rubbed my wife and I the wrong way--even if the price had come down an extra few thousand. We'll keep searching national inventories and see if we can locate an '08 that's a better fit.

Thanks very much for the advice!

You should def get a better price than what the dealer was asking for. And yes, I am sure there is some manufacturer to dealer money in the whole thing too.. Good you walked away..

2008 GL320 CDI
Incentives

I just bought a 2008 GL320 CDI. The CDI incentive was $8K. I recall the GL550 incentive being $7K. I was able to get my car at $12,900 off sticker. The GL550 is in somewhat shorter supply so somewhere around $12,500 off sticker would be a fair deal.

I think stock of 2008 GLs in general are drying up so if you are set on a 2008, you should act sooner rather than later. You may be able to do better than $13K off on a GL450 since those were still in relatively good supply.
