Which engine oil and filter for 2008 GL320 CDI

The mercedes manual specifies a 229.51 compliant oil and lists 3 for the CDI. It also states that you must use a "fleece" oil filter.

Mobil 1 ESP M 5W-40
Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30
ELF Solaris LSX 5W-30

My question is can I use the following available at autohausaz.com.

Elf TOTAL Quartz INEO MC3 5W30 for $36.42 for 5 qts--It is 229.51 compliant and fully synthetic.

They list a Mann oil filter for $11.30

Obviously I would prefer to use the MB listed oils and a filter from the dealer, but if the autohaus stuff is just as good, I will go with it.

Elf Solaris LSX is an old designation. It may have been superseded by the Total Quartz stuff listed. Check with a knowledgeable Elf supplier. The fact that it states on the bottle(s) that it meets 229.51 is important. The word 'compliant' vs 'meets' may be critical.

I have NEVER found a fleece oil filter for the 320 CDI engine. I even got the dealer to take one off the shelf for me and I opened the box and looked at it. It was NOT a fleece filter. Use the Mann filter.

I personally stick with 9 quarts of Mobil 1 ESP and a dealer filter. Never had an issue in 47000 miles.

dgiturbo...

where do you source the ESP Mobil?
and how much does it cost?

I presume you are paying about $18 for the dealer filter or have you found a better supplier?

fourdiesel...thanks. I will check with Elf. Would prefer to use the elf oil as it can be delivered to my door with free shipping from autohausaz.

ANB...

That is the very same stuff I use... From the same supplier as well.

Elf and Total are the same company. They merged back in 2000. In some cases they maintained separate brands, but Elf Solaris LSX and Total Quartz INEO MC3 is the same oil packaged and sold as two different brands...

Also the Mann filter from Autohaus is the same one that you would get from the dealer... I bought both and they are exactly the same down to the shiny MB parts holographic sticker on the box.

This link will take you to AV Lubricants. They have a pretty good selection of Mobil1 oils. As for the filter, I do pay around $18.00. Will check around next time if there is a better deal, time permitting.

Is this with the factory recommended 10k mile OCI's? Any idea what dealers charge for the 5w40 ESP?

Wow, that's $0.02 less per quart than WalMart charges for regular Mobil 1.

Actually, that was when I bought a couple quarts from their parts counter last summer. I just looked at my last service invoice from Nov '08, and they charged 5.90/qt.

I met a Motul rep and now there is a Motul 5w30 that is 229.51. Mostly available at performance shops, and not retail outlets. http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/m...r-p-46223.html

Just bought some at my dealer today. $6.79 / qt, up a few cents. Still cheaper than any other place I have found when you factor shipping.

Another option that is a little over $6.00 per quart. I have been using it in all my vehicles including my ATVs.
So far I am very happy with the results.

There are many very good lubricants, but only a couple that meet the 229.51 spec. I use Rotella in all my other diesels and have never had an engine issue. It meets the requirements of my Silverado's specs. That goes for our entire fleet of Fords and Chevy's. However, I will use a an oil that meets MB's specs at least until the warranty is out.

wow, you are lucky.
They charged me $7/quart last time, in January. But I guess it's cheaper than buying online and shipping, and faster.
Now you can get the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 for $8/quart.
I get the Mann filter for $11.30 from Autohaus Arizona, free delivery on orders over $50, and most of the time is next business day.

Maybe it's BS, but the 229.51 spec is created for engines with particulate filters. I have to assume that there is something in the formulation that is beneficial or necessary to the proper function of the particulate filters. I would not just switch to a good oil because it is specific to turbo-diesel-truck engines. At least not while the warranty is in effect.

Just for clarification, this oil meets and exceeds 229.51.

Isn't 229.51 is a newer spec than the 229.1/.2? Schaeffer might be okay but there are other choices available that do meet it.

The Mobil One Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 Meets CJ-4, CI-4, and CH-4 which are equivalent to 229.51 and must be used in conjuction with fleece oil filters which the stealer never used, they always used the paper filter.
According to the Factory Approved Service Products dated April 2007 that came with my truck on page 4 that's what they need to use or the MB Limited Warranty won't cover any engine damage.
After three MB trucks, and many oil changes performed at home, I learned that as long as I used Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and OEM oil filter the engines can take it.

Schaffers clearly meets or exceeds MB standards in the 5W-40 viscosity. 229.51 is low ash with anti wear additives. My Point in posting was to give options other than Dealer supplied Mobile 1. In the synthetic oil world Mobile one is not a top tiered brand. It meets the loose definition of synthetic but the base stock is petroleum.

Did the original question about oil filter get sabotaged? It is interesting that Sprinter diesel requires fleece oil filters, but the ML320 bluetec diesel (relatively the same engine) requires a shorter oil filter that does not come in fleece, only pleated paper. I went to Napa Auto to confirm Mann is different for the Sprinter and indeed is fleece, but for the ML diesel, it is a different Mann filter, shorter and pleated paper construction. Does anyone know the reasoning for fleece for one diesel and not the other when they are the same except for length?

Nothing you’ve related above means the filter you get at Mercedes dealer isn’t fleece.
