I use Blue Magic on the exhaust pipes on my Harley to remove the burnt on rubber from the soles of my boots. It works very well and in non-abrasive. I got it at PepBoys -- pretty inexpensive if I recall, too.

What is interesting is that MB discontinued offering chrome side steps as part of the GL accessory pack. Instead the steps are now made of brushed aluminum. I’ve heard of people complaining that chrome coating start peeling off over time. Look at your steps very carefully for signs of rust of peeled chrome. If you see any of such defects, MB should replace them for you at zero cost.

Milky Looking
I have replaced one at ZERO cost to me by MB. Recently the other side went milky and just finally decided to let it be... the part which is called a gravel cover is releativly cheap. I think i have posted the part number and price in another thread here. Basically, from my research there is not product out there to get a shine or cleaned enough or to get rid of the milky spots. I believe the milky issue comes from the chemicals at the car wash which to me are not that strong and the running boards should be able to withstand normal car wash. I just put 22's on so no more car wash in my future. good luck..
Part Number is 164-690-17-75 Gravel Cover which is basically the top portion of the board that they replace. It has a retail price of $167.70 being covered under warranty. The part like I said won't be until Oct 10.
Lessons Learned:
No CAR WASHES
Do NOT let anybody in site spray anything on the running boards
Wash yourself
Only Soap and Water...
