"Our" '09 GL 320 is primarily my wife's car - got it in April. I've been very impressed with it as well - liked it so much I just got an E-350 (I was thinking of the E-Diesel, but didn't want to wait). I do like the wheel on the E and agree the GL could use it (soooo much better than iDrive all around).
I think the engine is great. Same observation on mileage; my wife has a heavy foot and gets about 18 around town, 25 highway.
She got hit (no injuries) by a hit and run driver on the front end - $9000 repair (thank you Progressive). Driver's seat motor repaired last week - other than that no problems at about 8000 miles.

glad to hear your wife's ok. the mass of the GL does provide a safety net in an accident. i wouldn't put my family in anything smaller (4 kids). at least with the truck getting 24-25 mpg i can feel a little green as i haul everyone around.
