HVAC question

We purchased a CPO GL450, and during delivery the sales rep went over the controls with us. He mentioned that the Auto Setting for HVAC, which kicks on the AC should be left that way so that the AC is always set to on. I have been driving German cars for 24 years, so I realize that to take humidity out of the air you need to turn AC on, but it seems to me that during normal weather conditions this is just running the compressor and dragging down gas mileage. Any view on this from veteran MB owners ?

I have needed to "run" the compressor since mid October to prevent the front windows from fogging. I cant wait to turn it off for those same reasons.

Auto is auto. It does not always run in AC. I can hear and feel the compressor kicking on and off in the auto setting, and never kicks in below freezing unless I select only the defrost vents, then it kicks over to AC right away, even at 25 below...

secret feature: run the car in auto, park it and turn it off. Then press the button that says "A/C Rest" before you get out. Watch what happens...

Thanks for the replies. Yes ( per your other "AC/Rest" ) post I love that feature. What you said in this post is that in Auto the compressor does not always run ? When I hit auto the AC button also lights up. I can then turn AC off...but are you saying that even when Auto is selected and the AC button is also lit....that the compressor only is running when needed ?

Yes, I have Thermatic. If your GL has Thermotronic, it is probably the same.

I think the light is there just to show the potential of A/C, but does not mean the compressor is running. It's a pretty smart system.

Thanks for the info...that' would make me feel better if the compressor was not running for no reason. I'll look to see if I have "Thermatic" whatever that is :-) I am guessing I have it.

Well, think about it. If it's like 75 or 23c outside, you might need a little cooling if it's sunny outside. If you set the Thermatic to 70, it will get there pretty fast. If the compressor was running all the time, it would be 55 before you knew it, so it shuts down. It will, however run and mix if the zones are set too far apart, so keep that in mind.
