GL63 Sighting! - North Wilsonville OR

I've been a very light posting member of this forum for a few years, since I got my GL450, so do cut me some slack as a relative noob here - tires and BT module stuff is within my domain, but today I'm launching into a new level of posting here!

Today, late this morning while traveling NB about 70-ish on I-205 NB just north of its junction with I-5, I spied a black GL coming up from behind me in a hurry. A few seconds later as I was about to merge over a lane from the exit only lane, the GL was almost right behind me, and it passed me on the right to beat out a line of cars putzing in the middle lane (it did).

I had my window open and heard the throaty growl as the driver punched it - the growl is what got my attention, it sounded just like the ML63 owned by a former client. And, on the fender was the "6.3" and on the rear deck were those 4 rarified characters - "GL63". Yep, I'd swear to it. There wasn't any BRABUS bling on it, there wasn't any one element that yelled out "this is a knockoff".

I wasn't about to try to keep up with the driver, but did keep it in sight for about a mile or so. Where we were is about two miles north of the Wilsonville Rasmussen dealership - they're the ones who modded my C320 wagon a few years back with AMG and BRABUS upgrades - and I wouldn't put it past them to be one of the first in the US, they've had some really mean machines in their garage. I thought about trying to take a photo with my cell, but the rig was gone before I could really even think about it.

I'm happy with my GL and won't get another one without the OR package, but my sighting today might offer hope to you out there. One of my first thoughts? Post here!

I think the only one that would've made a "difference" is if it had a Manufacturer Ticket plate. Like Kent, I'll mention the numbers are extremely easy to replace.

I'll give you that. My GL is the first Benz I haven't shaved the badges off. It was the motor that got my attention, after I moved over that rig took off like a rocket from behind me - the driver wasn't tailgating or driving like an idiot aside from speeding. Don't shoot the messenger, I'm not prone to embellishment.

Didn't notice the plates, could have been either state (WA or OR). Or Uncle's.

My 550 really growls when I take off - not quite like my 63, but with an x pipe / some other simple exhaust work, I woudn't be surprised if a V8 550 was confused with a V8 63. And if you use the paddles well, then the 550 will move that 2.5 ton beast as fast as you need it to.

Not sure what to make of this. I'm mostly in agreement that it would take a few badges and some light exhaust work and a 550 would easily be confused for the real thing. Since your time was limited and it was out on the open road, we'll all have to sit back and watch if anything happens.

Very seriously doubt if GL63 AMG is happening. One can hope for it.

+1. AMG has already announced that they do not have plans for a GL63, and if those suddenly changed, a GL63 test mule wouldn't be running around fully uncovered until an official announcement.
