Help with Towing package on 07' GL450
Hi all,
I own a 07' GL450 and would like tow a 28' airstream travel trailer with it.
So I need to install a towing package on it.
Some suggested that because of the air suspension, I might have trouble installing a weight distribution hitch because of the hitch own weight (app. 1200 pounds) + welding issues etc.
Can you people comment on that? Thanks very much

Can someone point me to a service center around 100 Miles from zip 20878 that has experience installing tow packages for travel trailers and has all the parts available?

I am no expert. My understanding from this board and from my dealer is that adding an aftermarket or OEM tow hitch to these trucks is difficult and expensive - unless you order it from the factory.
Since the vehicle is a unibody and not a frame construction, it is hard to attach a hitch.
My suggestion is to work with your dealer. They can get the parts that are used at the factory and install the hitch. It is just expensive and labor intensive. I was quoted $3k but others have stated $2k.
My GL is being built this week. I ordered the factory tow package. I cannot believe that MB doesn't put it on all of the GLs. Come on!
Good luck.

It is much more than just the hitch - which requires an LARGE amount of work to take all the required body parts off before the hitch install can even begin. After that, the rear SAM [Signal Acquisition Module] must be replaced or reprogrammed to allow the electronic stability program to properly function. If not already present, wires must also be run to the front under the dash to feed the brake controller.
Many have recommended that it is perhaps better to simply buy another GL (used or new) with the hitch already there!
