Its metal cuz you get small rust spots...don't think its stainless but its metal not plastic.

I get those small rust spots too but the ones I get only occur in the wiinter when I'm driving on salt covered roads. I only hand wash my GL so I've been able to notice small flecks of metal that show up after I've driven in salt. I could be wrong but the conclusion I've come to is that the metal is coming from the machines they are using to pulverize and process the salt and brine. I know a guy that has an X5 with running boards and he gets the same thing. You need to wash the salt residue off as soon as possible to minimize those spots. I've also noticed the metal shavings on the top edges of the chrome door moulding after driving in salt.
