Interesting Discovery...
I was washing my car the other day and made an interesting discovery. For the 2010/2011 models, the GL350 Bluetec skid plate in the front has more "boxes" than that on the GL450. The skid plate on the GL450 has 3 boxes compared to 5 on the Bluetec. Why do you think Mercedes would do this?

It is spark ignition (lower compression ratio, less heat, less efficient) vs. compression ignition.

It is the same size engine as in the '08,'09 and the same charge air cooler (in front of the radiator) arrangement. I haven't looked at my '08 CDI skid plate and counted the holes (if any) but unless they are all "5 holers" I doubt cooling issues are the reason.

definitely not for cooling. if anything diesels have problems building heat as there are no pumping losses. no throttle body. diesels in the winter are notoriously cold blooded. big trucks even block off some of the radiator so engines can reach operating temps and provide some cabin heat...
