Something strange i deep snow!

Hi everyone!
I'll try to make myself understood in English. :-)

Something strange happened with my GL 320 2008 model the other day. I was out driving in pretty extreme weather. It snowed a lot, and the streets were not plowed. There were about 30 - 40 cm of snow on the roads. Of course no problem for the car even though I ran into quite steep hills in the city.
What was strange is that when I run into the garage at home, the car had risen 5 to 6 cm without that I had touched the switch for elevation.
What I wonder is if the car has automatic "raising" if the surface - in this case the snow - is so high that it reaches under the car?

I checked this with a local dealer, but he had not heard about this.
Anybody know?

This is very strange. I was just noticing the same thing, but I thought it was all in my head. My car seems to sit higher in the winter. I guess it is possible that the airmatic is somehow connected to the traction control system, so that a lot of slippage at low speed causes the car to raise a bit. Or it could be something about the car's attitude changing in heavy snow having an impact on the auto level. Seems more obvious on the front in my car.

The same happens to gl. At any given time it may ride a little lower or higher, for no apparent reason.

I only have 6 inches of clearance in my garage. Any idea how much higher the car rose?

For my situation I would say no more than 1 inch.

At approx 2.5 cm/in, 5cm = abt an inch or a little more. It'll still fit in your garage!

not sureif this relates..but:

when the truck is in "sport" it drops... when put into comfort or with no light lit at all (automatic) on the rocker switch.. the truck will rise. (you will also notice that the truck is top heavyfeeling.)

I would say that it doesn't, because I dont think he's riding in sport mode when there's plenty of snow around. However if you hit 60 mph I believe it then will lower a half of a inch automatically, for better handling.

Thanks for the great answers!
Can I then conclude that it is a kind of control that adjusts the height of the vehicle under the circumstances?
The car had guaranteed risen about 6 cm after the trip in deep snow, and I had not touched any switches. Runs not in sport mode, but without any light on the switch.

Yes you are right. I was reading through the owners manual, and the suspension is adjusted automatically due to surrounding conditions.

Page 279, talks about auto ride height adjustment for better handling and fuel mileage. I love my 450.
