Wiper Replacement

Hello - taking our 2011 GL350 in four 10k service tomorrow. What should I expect to pay for front and back wiper replacements? Is it better to the OEM at dealer or online or purchase non oem and if non oem what brand/make?

Thanks for the help!

Do you need to replace your wipers? I'm in Ohio too and I changed them at 20,000 and really they were fine then. I'm at 31,000 now and they are still good as new. I won't replace them again until 40,000.

Yeah - it seems like it. Even though we have only had the car for about 90 days - I think it was produced around the a year ago. They seem to be streaking quite a bit, so I assume they need to be replaced. Maybe not?

$60 on EBAY for all 3.

It says wipers for 2008 model. I don't know if they are the same as 2010-11.

If you're not already doing it, try wiping both sides of your blades routinely with a soapy sponge when you wash the car or use the bucket of washer fluid at the gas station to wet a paper towel and wipe off both sides of your blades.

Tried that, but did not work. Thanks for the tip though.

I think the ones on eBay will not fit 2011.

Wiper blades are the one thing I ALWAYS buy at the dealer, no matter what car brand. The generic refills never fit quite like OE. It's maybe the only case where paying the dealer up-charge actually makes sense (oil filters might be the other, depending on the car).

So last winter in the middle of hellacious snow and ice in Upper Peninsula MI wiper fails on passenger side. Plastic clip ices and breaks. I used electrical tape of all things to secure temporarily. Napa has aftermarket option sent overnight for around $30 pair. They looked, felt, and worked as good as OEM. No dealer for hundreds of miles. I now keep a spare set under floor in rear storage. Bought similar Good Year set from Costco for less than $10 for emergency. Be prepared and keep your options open. Especially if you are bothered by $50. My opinion.

Ended up doing that on Saturday and they did replace under warranty. Still going to get a spare set, as we travel a lot and you never know when you could need them.

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions.

Mark - I disagree with your suggestion about buying OEM at the dealer - in this case the OEM wiper refills are made by Bosch. Why pay dealer markup on what can be sourced for less elsewhere (and without sales tax)?

Because the aftermarket ones, whoever the manufacturer, are rarely cut to fit exactly. Retailers are not going to stock every combination of size for every vehicle, so they carry the most common sizes that are "close enough" for some percentage of the vehicles out there.

OE blades from the dealer are exact because they only have to carry the sizes that fit their vehicles.

But, buy what you want.

What ever floats your boat. However finding a non OEM rear blade can be a challenge. Try a NAPA # NBR12E. The are about $10.50 and work well for me.

I tried the Rain X Latitudes blades because mine got so bad I needed some new ones on the spot. Never again! The blades look just like the OEM ones but the performance is HORRIBLE! They leave very bad streaks and are loud. I would have taken them back after the first week but I discarded the receipt.
