Winter tires

I've been able to locate 1 choice for the 275/50/r20 size for my winter tire choice, the pirelli ice and snow. Can I have opinions pls on whether or not I can go to a 265/50/r20 or a 285/50/r20 each of those sizes has more choice. which if any is the better way to go, up or down?

I live in northern BC which means -40 and several feet of snow, so the stock all season don't cut it.

tks for help!!

or what about going to a 275/55/r20....I understand all these numbers but it's just the juggling them that has me questioning them. Is it better to adjust the width or the hight??

You can use this tire size calculator to determine the difference in size:

Try to keep the same aspect ratio; narrower would obviously be better for winter. For example, you should be good with 265/50/20.

If you can find some 18" rims, Nokian WRG2 SUV has been a great setup on my GL in 265/60/18 in BC-Alberta.

I just changed original 275/50R20 Run Flats to 285/50R20 regular tires ( not winter ). No problems and looks great. For winter I'd use Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 285/50R20.

How do Blizzak's perform on dry pavement?

Up is not good for snow...and....like Brocktoon says, the Nokian's are great....probably the best!

That's an all-season tire. Not good for anything in actual snow.

Those Pirellis you found are AMAZING. I have those as my winter setup, and I have never been stuck (or even worried) when the weather has been record-setting (DC storms a couple winters ago, etc.). Get them & be happy.

I have Pirelli Snow and Ice on 19" rims and was amazed at the grip last winter. Snow, ice, slush whatever it had to deal with was sure footed. Never slipped and felt really confident with them. The even haven't worn much after 15,000 miles and will easily have enough deep tread for this winter coming. they get my vote for sure.
