wrong.
the rim bends when the tire bottoms out and there is nothing to give. the more pressure you run in the tire- the harder it is to "fold" all the way to the rim.
generally speaking you want road-tire-air-rim... rims bends when the sequence becomes road-tire-rim
of course jump in the "right" pothole and nothing will save your rim regardless of pressure. but higher pressure protects your rim better. the rule of the thumb is that for every inch additional tire diameter you want a 1.5 psi of additional pressure. thus if you run 18" stock and you go to 20" you want to go from say 33 to 36 psi
