Cool Glass on roof peeling?

I got a 2008 GL450 and I recently noticed that there are signs of peel on the edges of the roof glass. Could it be the tint peeling off? But I can't imagine that the tint can be applied on the outside. Could it be something else? I tried to clean it using Windex but it remains the same. Thanks

Looks like the polycarbonate itself is breaking down. Weird.

I feel like this topic has come up before, but I can't remember the result.

It happened to our 2007, first the dealer said it was normal, told sa last MB we would buy, then it was replaced under warranty. Now it has an engine oil leak! 20 trips to the dealer in 5 years, going to trade in 4 months and wondering if it would be more of the same?

Now just one GL450 with EORP.
It's polycarbonate which doesn't stand up to UV rays very well. The only fix is replace.

Wink

Thanks for the replies. I will see if the dealer can replace it under warranty.
It is strange that the sunroof piece is still OK...

That's great! I'm concerned that I'm having the same problem on my car. When I look from the third row into the sunroof, I see a shimmery effect when the sun hits the sunroof from the outside. In other words, the view isn't clear; its cloudy. D

Did this happen to you as well?

See the pic I posted at the head of the thread. It looks like peeling of a tint film.

Yes, but could you please post a picture of the glass from the inside of the vehicle?

Oops I didn't take any shot from that angle but I do recall seeing that it was not completely clear as day.

Rear sunroof defective - replace under warranty?

I know it's been a while – but I was wondering if I could get more information about getting your rear sunroof replaced under warranty. I have the same problem and they are denying my claim under warranty.

Rear sunroof

What oes the dealer want to replace the rear plexiglass roof?

Looks like a real tough job as the headliner will have to come down, roof rack rails come off. Any idea how much the part is?

Polish it like a headlamp and reapply a UV protectant Clear Coat.

Has anyone tried to put a dark wrap/film on it to hide the ugly marks?

A darker film won't fix the issue. It might tone it down a bit, but you'll still see it on a bright day. Like Jay said, it can be compounded/polished. The film that is on there can be basically sanded away until everything looks good - then just keep up on waxing to protect it. I don't know enough about clearcoating the film (or plexiglass if you end up sanding the entire film away) to comment. As long as plexi (or the film) can be clearcoated, it sounds like a better, long-term solution than wax.

If you sand you MUST UV clearcoat.

If you store it outside or park in the sun daily, I would think UV film would be worth the cost.

A good quality wax "could" work as it is a UV protectant. But given that it's on the top of the car and would be getting direct sunlight, I think one would need to keep up on the waxing on a more regular basis than the rest of the car. But spraying would definitely be the more desirable way to go.

Can you get a decent clearcoat in a rattle can? I'm in the process (well, have been "in the process" for a couple months... ) of fixing my plexi right now.

I googled "uv film for windows" and came up with plenty of choices. It appears it's easiest enough to find/get. Is there anything specific to look for?

Youir Google broken?

P.S. Wax has nearly zilch UV protection. Just is not thik enough.

No, not broken. I just don't know enough about the different clearcoats out there and how they work with plexiglass. Also in regards to longevity/how long they would last. The last thing I want to do is buy it based on price alone, and then have to come back a year or two later and do it all over again. I have no problems doing the actual work, I just want to make sure to get a good product.

It sounded like you may have some experience with clearcoat? I was just hoping to hear what you might think is a quality product. Or... am I making this into a harder decision than it needs to be?

Do you have experience with the film, too?

I have only used clear coat from an auto paint store. Don't know if it is better or worse, but it was more expensive than a hardware store.

Tell them you need to spray headlights.

I have not done the film, as mine is garaged most of the time. I know there are UV films used on headlights. The same stuff should work.
