We probably would have gone with the Q7 if we didn't use the 3rd seat. Whoever designed the 2nd row seats must never have thought about getting into the rear. It's a nightmare climbing back there, and my kids insist on splitting apart to avoid fighting. Once back there, it's another story with the leg room.
In terms of driving, the Q7 beats the GL hands-down. However, I've found the GL growing on me in terms of comfort and looks. It was the only real choice for us with our family.

We test drove the 7 for a couple of weeks. Liked everything about it except 3rd row seating and accessibility. The GL also has more interior room. (at least it felt that way to me)
We also liked the look of the "squarer" lines of the GL. Especially once I get rolling on some 22 Mandrus

2012 GL Bluetec
Had the exact same experience....and chose the GL.
Loved the MMI interface on the Q7, but it looks like a hippo from the outside...!!! I like the Q5 a lot more. From my research the GL gets somewhat better mileage, and has more capacity to haul our 6600lb boat.
Have had the GL for about 6 weeks, and not once have I wished I had gone with the Q7.
