isn't it triggered via photocell? that is how it's designed in my w210. if so,
you can just get a piece of translucent gel film and just stick it to the glass.
should stick simply by surface tension. be be aware that this ghetto mod may
also affect the outside mirror's auto-dim as well

Shame there's no simple off button. The autodim mirrors in my Jag and Toyota both have an Off switch.
