Glowplug replacement

Hi, Is there a standard mileage/duration for when they should be replaced?
Also are they easy to replace?

glow plugs are not a wear item on the x164 platform.

2008 GL320cdi

One of mine died at 125,000 miles on a 2008 GL. I went ahead and replaced all. Can't remember what it cost for labor. I bought the plugs themselves from rm european.

I read somewhere that the CDI engine does not need glow plugs to start unless temp is below zero. Is this true?
