Old thread but I had the same issue on my 2011 GL 550, turns out water was leaking from the plastic clip that the tail light slides into on the quarter panel. Had the wife spray water over the light and saw it coming through the plastic body clip. Water was leaking into my rear SAM. I tore it apart and stuck it in rice for 24 hours and put it back together, everything has been good so far. Will set aside some money if the rear sam ever does decide to die on me in the future.

if that doesnt fix it - clean them carefully (from outside) with soap and water.

if that doesnt fix it- you need to replace your sensor harness. fairly easy.
how did you know about the bumper everything on mine was working fine until I hit a bump in the road then it started acting crazy just like his was doing the red light for the battery was coming on my fan wasn’t working right nothing that I did what you said hit the bumper and everything seems to be back to normal The only thing I can think of is sometime ago I had the vehicle repaint it and They took everything off to paint it
