Anyone replaced a steering rack?

Mines started leaking from where the shaft enters the rack.

Anyone replace one?, is it a reasonable DIY, any tips?

Spendy! Mine leaks a little now. It has got to leak a LOT more fluid to make it worthwhile to make the change.

So I did some research, looked under the car and got a quotefrom my Indy at around 6 hrs labor!.

Looks like you have to remove the front axles , then the frontdifferential/drive to give you space to then remove the steering rack.

Started it last night, first issue was/is cracking the axlesour of the hub, 6 Minnesotan winters have done their very best to rust those 2together, count every hammer them free. So today they are soaking in liquidwrench, and I hope that I can strip the brakes off and get a puller on them tocrack the joint.

If I cant crack it then I guess the only way to get it out(passenger side) will be to pull the lower suspension out with the hub andaxle.

My indy wanted $2,200 for the complete job with an MB rack,I’ve ordered a rack from Napa at $600, so I’ll update how it goes.

I am sure it will be a long winded job, but we have a longweekend coming up and saving $1,500 is worth it in my mind.

I’m terrible at taking pics whilst I work, I’ll try andremember to do so, and at least I’ll do a written post.
