Purchasing advice on a GL 320

Hello MB owners!

I'm in the market for a new SUV and strongly considering a GL Diesel. I have searched through the forums and online and found sporadic info on reliability ratings, model variances, etc. but wanted to get some real results for current owners. Can anyone give me some advice on the following?

1. What's the best year to buy in a GL Diesel? (used, pre 2010... because budget)
2. What type of reliability issues might I run into and what does cost of maintenance look like? (perhaps compared to owning other SUV's in the same class)
3. Are there any concerns with high mileage vehicles? (100k+)

Thanks in advance!

We own a '07 GL320 and love the vehicle. However, it's quite complex and as you'll note surfing this forum it's got a habit of breaking things. The nice thing about the early diesel is NO AdBlue diesel liquid and we have a spare tire which is deleted in the adblue model.

The air ride system can all be replaced at home and even trashed and replaced with coil springs if desired. I replaced both front and rear air bags on the passenger side in several hours myself at home for $350.

Oil cooler seal and turbo seals frighten me. Mine has a casual leak somewhere which only manifested itself AFTER a free checkup at Sun Motors in Mechanicsburg PA. It's a $2000 repair using $115 in parts. I will do it myself at home eventually but I've read it'll take me 12 hours under the hood.

So why oh why do I keep it?
It is cheaper per month than my Honda Odyssey was, it rides great and feels great to drive, gets an honest 21mpg hacking around Dover, PA and most importantly it has a soul. I have a car I care about again. The Odyssey was good transportation but if it had fallen off a cliff I wouldn't have cared. I love my Benz and feel like a king when I'm in it. I'll suffer the inconvenience of maintaining it to have the pleasure of keeping it.
