It seems to me that code is because the transmission isn't shifting.

It could be low fluid, old or dirty fluid, bad Shift solenoids, or the transmission control circuit.

Are there any other codes? Either way you need to at least replace the fluid. And go from there.

without star/das readout of the tcu a diagnosis would be a waste of time / money

it could be as simple as low tranny fluid level (did anybody do a tranny service recently? do you have any leaks?) or a conductor plate malfunction or a serious mechanical issue.

No dont have records of car which was bought 5 months from a shady dealer. Think change the tranny fluid might be good start.

To assist anyone having this issue in the future, mine was resolved through a transmission rebuild. Apparently the seals inside the transmission had torn.

My 2006 GL500 (The Australian GL550) had 65,000km. I had tried a transmission service - Replacing filter and ATF / draining Torque converter, this didn’t work.

I tried replacing the valve body and ordered transmission body speed sensors from China before surrendering to an independent Mercedes mechanic, who had to tear down the transmission to find the torn seals.

Ended up costing quite a bit to get it back on the road.
