Exhaust smell in cabin.
2008 gl 320cdi
Just started to notice today a strong, what I think to be exhaust smell in the cabin. It could be a burning oil leak on exhaust but don't see smoke. Not sure what a leaky fuel injector smells like but maybe
any common strong smells that plague the cabin ???
thank you
Steve

We have no idea where you live, but getting a good independent repair shop to give the exhaust system a thorough looking over is a worthwhile investment. If it is leaking lube oil on the hot exhaust the leak should be fixed and if it is a cracked pipe you should know where and what.

It kind of smells like oil and lingers after car off, do thinking an oil leak. I will probably bring car to mechanic in few thousand miles for the diesel filter and some other preventive maintenance. It is overwhelming if AC is on. If off don't smell a thing.
in about 1000 miles I will do oil change so will look then. Maybe turbo seals?

check your steering column rubber boot where it goes through the firewall. they do tear up and when they do you get that smell in the cabin.
if not -
your injector seals are leaking gases.
if not -
your intercooler seals are leaking oil which promptly drains on the exhaust and burns up. most noticeable (as mentioned) when you come to a stop and shut off the vehicle

Since it does not pass through unless the a/c is on I think the boots are good.
In about 5000 miles I will have the diesel filter changed. At that time I will have the injector seals checked as well as the intercooler seals.
I have read posts about changing seals such as the turbocharger and intercooler on a preventative basis. Anyone have part numbers of the newest seals.
Funny thing is seems like my gas mileage is better. Maybe 2-3 mpg better.

The smell seems to linger a while after vehicle is turned off. Which is pointing me to thinking oil burning off. I did notice when I changed the oil the rear belly pan was wet.
I will bring in for service in few months when my fuel filter is due. I also plan to have a green diesel eco tune and dpf delete.
I will report back what I find. .

You sure it is exhaust smell and not oil burning smell? Wet rear diaper is usually an indication of a leaky turbo intake seal or oil cooler seals. The smell from burning oil is usually the strongest immediately after you shut off the vehicle.

No really sure. But as mentioned earlier I did think it smelled more like oil. I would prefer it to be oil intake seals. But if it is the oil cooler seals I plan to have the egr and swirl motors removed. This company will weld up the ports and exchange the intakes. So if it is the oil cooler I will at least get something accomplished rather then a big bill. They mostly work with jeeps but since it is the same engine basically have been branching out. 😀

2006 R500, 2009 GL550
Just want to chime in, as I also have this problem.
2009 GL550:
- smells like old burnt oil to me, not like something is currently smoking.
- happens on cold days when the truck is warming up (5-10 minutes as Greg states)
- don't smell it while driving, only while parked.
- now that I'm smelling for it, I notice it outside the vehicle too.
I took it to the dealer last week and we let it idle in the service bay for 10 minutes. Of course, there was no smell while I was there. It was about 10 degrees (C), and the vehicle was plenty warm by then from highway driving.
Seems to only happen when cold.

I believe so. Oil was seeping out. Not sure what effect it might have had on the vehicle. Normally I thought a bad pvc would cause oil consumption. Which I think my oil loss was strictly minimal form seepage
