Turbo replacement ? Rebuild?
Hello, I went to the mechanic today because I have a lot of oil consumption and he told me to replace or rebuild the turbo. He show me how the shaft moves inside and because of that the seals inside have to be broken and the oil is leaking trough there.
It's possible a higher oil consumption because of that? The car runs great, no loss of power.
By the way, the engine has 160k, so the guy told me its normal to redo the turbo with this miles.
Anyone knows the Garret model for the OM642 ?
Thanks !

If the shaft moves radially (sideways) when you put pressure on with your finger then the bearing/seal is gone. If it moves a bit AXIALLY - along the axis of the shaft - it is NOT worn out. If #1 happens and you are losing oil, you are probably catching a lot of it in the low parts of the charge air cooler system.
You may have to do a bit of shopping (start with turbo specialty places that cater to the aftermarket 'hot rod' folks) but you should be able to get it rebuilt. Rebuilding is more than just replacing the bearings. It also involves careful cleaning of the variable vanes in the exhaust side.
