COMAND Issue with Ipod Classic

I have a 2012 GL350 that is pretty well optioned. Since day 1 I have used my iPod classic hooked to the vehicle through the factory cable in the glove box. Up until recently it worked as I expected.

I've always searched for an Artist by hitting the OK button, then selecting Artist. Then I hit the appropriate number on the number pad to select the letter that the artist begins with, then scroll through the list with the up/down buttons. Not as easy as in my BMW, but it was good enough.

Recently, when I try to do this, I press the keypad to select the letter that the artist starts with, it either fails and goes back to the current playback, or defaults to the letter K no matter what letter I selected.

I tried resetting COMAND two different ways according to posts I found (and the method in the owners manual), and both reset COMAND in slightly different manners, but the issue persists.

Am I doing something wrong, or is COMAND messed up? Did I inadvertently change a setting on the iPod? Any suggestions would be appreciated as it's frustrating to try to select a new artist while driving (not to mention a bit dangerous.)
