Gl 320 alt replacement
I had a low voltage warning come on. I am assuming it is an alternator problem. I have 150k.
On the diesel how hard of a job is it and best source for alternator. I have a brake controller that shows actual voltage. It started at 12.5. By the time I got home an hour or more later it slowly dropped to 11.5

I was curious since I have oil splatter on the belt from either the oil filter housing and the high pressure pump or both. So I ran a bar of soap last night along the belt. This morning drove an voltage was 13.65 for about 7 min it took me to get to the grocery. In drive back the battery light back up and down to just over 12. I am also having more consistent issues with the AC blowing warm.
I am thinking the oil saturated belt is tight when cold and when heats up its stretched and slipping. Seeing what the concensus is.
Will being into my Indy when he can see it to change oil gaskets and belt. I guess the alternator would have to be pulled and bench tested to know for sure its longevity

So what is the name or part number of the black part on front of engine with sticker on it under the coolant hose and adjacent to the oil filter
I called 4 different dealerships with no help. I need to replace the gasket under it
Thanks

I'll bring in next week for new alt and belts with oil leak fixes.
Untill is tjhere a recommended battery tender. I used to have battery tender brand. I did not know if needed a certain amperage one for the gl since has bigger battery?

The Battery Tender brand is just fine. With the obvious caveat that it's a "tender", not a charger (assuming you have something like a 1amp charger/maintainer). Meaning, it will certainly charge the battery, but depending on how depleted it is, it may take quite a while (possibly days). But as far as whether it is safe for the battery, or not... yes, totally fine to do so. I've charged bigger batteries than the Merc battery with similar chargers (Battery Minder brand).
Have you checked for loose/corroded wires - at the battery, at the alternator, and all grounds?

I had to remove my alternator to get it rebuilt (half price of a new unit). It was causing red battery light on dash. Battery wasn't charging. Not a hard job (for me) to do.

Thanks for the replays. Changed alt and while there had the starter also changed. Can feel it turning over much faster. At 150k figured a good time. Had a friend with dodge diesel that a weak starter caused broken tooth on flywheel from weaker starting. ☹️
Voltage at 14.3
Will do again at 300k probably 😀
