take to workshop won’t crank

I have a 2007 Mercedes GL 450 4MATIC. As of today the check engine light came on and in red the saying "TAKE TO WORKSHOP WITHOUT SHIFTING GEARS" came on. Got the vehicle parked. Once attempted to re crank the vehicle all dash lights are on along with the same "take to workshop" and vehicle will not crank. No turning over or anything. I can hear multiple relays kicking in and out as well as the air ride suspension raising and lowering. Tried reading codes but cant get in and reset. Tried disconnecting battery for a minute but nothing changed. Any ideas or suggestions on a solution to at the very least get it to crank?

Sounds like something died in the transmission, that's normally when you get that "don't shift gears" error. If the TCM isn't communicating, the car can't pass the DAS tests and will not allow it to start. The Ignition, M/E, and TCM all need to give an OK to allow the starter to fire, if one is dropped off the network you won't even get it to crank.

That’s good information thank you. Doesn’t sound like it’s much to do outside of getting it on a wrecker and carried to Mercedes?

Pretty much. If one of those components failed, the only way to replace it is through a dealership anyway.

You can get rebuilt 722.9 transmissions now, installed by third parties. No longer a dealer-only item.

Still can't initial startup a new TCM though. You have to transfer it.

Technically, you can, but you have to get one that's rebuilt and virginized which is "not an MB approved repair"

Physically rebuilding the trans or valve body is doable by any competent trans shop. It's only MB being stupid about locking the trans controller up that makes it a hassle.

That's what they do, at least as far as I know. My knowledge is weak, of course. My trans replacement went smoothly and has run great ever since.
