Yes. It was called the off road package.

Look for the dials where the push out tray is.

very very rare though.

A Canada brochure

do you know whether it was available in the USA though? I see there are Canadian brochures and manuals that list it, but I haven't seen any in the USA.

SYes. I’ve seen them on plenty of us models when shopping.

sorry. It’s a center diff. Not a rear.

yeah I think they all have the center diff. Wish I could get the rear-even if after market. I'm starting to think they were only available in Canada.

Why do you keep saying Canada?

They were definitely an option on x164 models in the US. There was just a very low take rate on the option.

Nearly all eu models of the x164 have the off road package because I belive it was standardkit .

Nevertheless. It was available in the USA. Lots of forum members really take it as a challenge to find one with the option to buy for themselves.
It is just very rare.

Just a couple months ago I saw a x164 550 that had the off roaf package on Carmax.

They're out there if you really want one. You just have to be meticulous in your search.

i mention Canada because in the limited information on the internet about this option, manuals and brochures for Mercedes marketed to Canada come up quite a bit.

I will keep looking in that case. I'm searching across like 35 states on Craigslist and haven't seen one for a week or two, hence my skepticism that they actually exist here.

Is there any reason to believe they're more common on the 450's or 550's?

FYI this is only available on the GL450 in the USA, not 320/350 diesel nor 550.

To be legal to sell in the USA, each drivetrain must pass EPA testing, which includes an actual 50K mile road test. Clearly Mercedes didn't see sales recovering those costs for all versions.

i found the diff on eBay.

What do you think the chances of being able to retrofit a diff locker into a nondiff locker GL would be?

the reason it wasn’t equipped in the gl350 was actually to discourage grey market exports/imports into Europe and other markets.

Since the eu and other markets value diesel models and they usually all came equipped with the off road package anyway Mercedes thought it would be wise to not equip the USA diesels with the off road package to discourage exporters to take advantage of lower us prices.

No I don't think so. It does have the down hill and uphill assist along with raising the vehicle.

Incorrect. I have seen 550's with the Enhanced Off-Road Package.

Be careful, though: There is an Off-Road Optics Package which is a metal bottom plate and a few other things.

I've been looking for a while for the off-road package and found some on CarGurus, since you can select the option in the research. Unfortunately some ads say they have it but the pictures of dashboard doesn't show it.

Am wondering, is it possible to install a rear lock ?
I have the GL 350.

Yeah, watch out - I figured out there is an Off-Road Optics package, which is a chromed front underbody pan and maybe something else. AKA "crap we charge an arm and a leg for and get away with".

I pondered the options with my indy and he laughed: I'd be better off just getting a GL with the EORP package, scarce as they may be, than trying to retrofit.

Under no circumstances should any forum member be allowed to brag about their EORP GL. Those among us who understand it are jelly as hell. I'd love it, but not enough to buy a whole new GL with it - if it came to that, I'd walk away to something else. We're stuck in purgatory. I don't care about the fancy suspension settings; I just want the lockers and low range.

The only thing worse is someone reporting they came upon an EORP that got trashed because the soccer mommy didn't understand it. I can't even buy one used because of this risk.

Being oblivious to the potential "soccer mommy" mistreatment of the EORP, I picked up a specimen equipped with said option without second thoughts. I might live to regret it... time will tell. Servicing diffs can't be more complicated than servicing a manual tranny, can it?

Are they really that rare? I've got an 08 550 and there's a button (not a dial) to raise and lower the suspension separate from the comfort and sport modes. No differential lock button though. I take it may have been a standard option on the 550s?
