2008 GL 450 SUV
Newbie questions

Hi, I have a 2008 black GL 450 SUV in excellent condition. It just turned 100,000 miles and was purchased new for me to haul my grandkids. It has been a wonderful vehicle with very few problems so I am not the least interested in ever selling it.

I do not know if I am at the right sub-forum since I saw the numbers 164 and 165 on the menu. Can someone explain that to me? It was quite amazing to see all the new SUV designations.

I would like ask everyone’s opinion on what is the best rubber mats for my SUV since I am interested in replacing the removable carpet mats with rubber ones. When I say best I mean which company or do I go back to the MB dealer? I see several online and I noticed the ones on Amazon do not have very good reviews.

Also, what is a good product to restore and clean all the black plastic trim on the car that has faded to a dull medium grey color. I am not a fan of Armorall and hate it on my tires. I am looking specifically at the faded plastic on the rear lower bumper just above the tail pipes. Any product suggestions and opinions concerning this?

Your replies, suggestions and opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It’s best I think to have any floor mats attach to the snaps that exist on your floor. Keeps them safely in place, not interfering with your operation of brake or accelerator pedal. Those sold at your dealer for sure have the correct snaps.

Very good point. I forgot how great those snaps are.

if you want mats that are rubber and have the mb logo the Mercedes all weather rubber mats are great.

If if you want full protection the kagu max spider 3D mats are the best!

Amazon Amazon

i have a 2010 so I have less plastic than yours. But this is what I use. Every so often I wipe it on with a microfiber cloth and it looks good as new. Every 3-4 weeks or something. It’s the best you can do because the grey is uv damage. You can try using a hair dryer or heat gun but that’s pretty dangerous so close to the paint.

I use Weathertech. They seem pretty good; they're moulded to be like a tray and fasten with snaps, although the snaps don't hold forever.

Kathlyn, you have an "X164" GL. The newer version of the GL is an "X166".

I generally like WeatherTech as they're a solid company with a solid product. For the GL, though, I wanted something just a little less "truckish" looking so I bought that MaxSpider one. I've had them about 4 years and they have been working well. There's probably no "best" mat as it often comes down to personal preference. But make sure you get a style for the second row seats that goes over the hump in the middle - not just individual left/right mats.
