How to jack up GL450?
Hi,
How to jack up GL450 and let it sit on jack stands? The jack stand pad on the side of the vehicle is not large enough to allow both floor jack and jack stand, so I have to jack it up using some other positions and then lower it onto jack stands that sit under the jack stand pads on the vehicle.
I did some research and I think I have found the answer, but I want to ask to make sure I got it right.
For the front, is it point A in the attached picture (gl450_front_jackPoints.jpg)? For the rear, is it point A in the attached picture (gl450_rear_jackPoints.jpg)? In gl450_rear_jackPoints.jpg, C is a after market hitch re-enforcement on some kind of beam (where B points to). If A is not the right place to jack it up, should the beam B be used for this purpose? (but the hitch re-enforcement is really in the way).
What A points to is the differential, right?
Thank you very much!

Hi
For rear work I leave the jack on the jack pad and put a stand under the hitch. You can also do this in reverse - jack the hitch mount and put the stands on the pads.
For front work jack on the a-arm pivot with a piece of wood buffer, and put the stand on the jack pad.

There is no way in hell that I would put a jack on the differential to lift the car onto stands. Those cases are cast aluminum and the vehicle weighs almost 6,000 pounds.
I have a lift in my garage, but if I didn't, then I'd jack it on a sub-frame mount (e.g. front or rear axle carrier), a suspension pickup point, or a trailer hitch to subframe mount.

If all you want to do is compress the suspension to change a tire, then yes, those spots would work. Otherwise, you need to go to the solid points. But why not use the front, center jacking point as noted? And since you have a hitch, why not use that? Certainly makes things much easier using those two point.

Are you saying that for the front, I should/could use point A in the following picture?
Thank you very much!

Yes, use the front, center jacking point. Then you can add your jacks behind the wheels. It's not that you CAN'T use other spots, but that one is the simplest to raise the entire front end.

Do I need to do anything special to with the air suspension before jacking the car up? I am asking because on a Ford Expedition that I had before, I had to switch off the air suspension before lifting it.
Thanks.
PS: I know it's an older thread but it's on topic. Thanks.

if you want to double guard yourself the airmatic c/b is the definite answer.
