Idata start remote starter
Works perfect. Consider adding the Drone Mobile attachment (requires subscription) then you can start/stop your GL remotely from anywhere with your phone. Nice to remote start it in winter when I'm still in the mall.
Quite simple install:
1. System goes behind dash. I believe I pulled the radio for access.
2. Unhook harness going to EIS (ignition switch) and plug into T-harness that comes with idatastart. Plug other end of T-harness back into ignition switch. Other end of harness goes into the idatastart module. Basically the system goes "inline" with the existing ignition switch and harness.
3. If you have keyless go, you need to run a 2 pin connector all the way to the right rear fuse panel in the trunk. I ran mine under the dash then under the trim panels below the doors (thresholds I think they're called) and into the trunk area.
4. Lots of programming steps but it is well documented in the manual
I believe the module needs to be quickly programmed for your specific car model as it's "generic" out of the box. You can buy a USB cable and download the software, but any installer has the setup to do it. I'd try to buy from a local installer if the price is close to Amazon/eBay (which I thinik it was...) just to know that they could program it for my car.
This is the basic programming of course (they programmed it for a 2007 GL 320 CDI in my case, no other options or programming details). Then once installed you do the rest (runtime, keyless go or not keyless go, etc.)
Have had it almost 3 years and love it!
Also some cool features.. If below a certain temp when it starts the car, it also turns on both heated seats. I think the rear defrost comes on too. Wipers won't run till you get in the car and push the start button (to signify you're in the car with the key) so if you leave wipers on and there is lots of snow on the windshield, you'd otherwise damage the wipers. With this unit the wipers can't run until you're in the car for safety... pretty well thought out system!
Only downside I have ever found is this.. if you lean in (with key in your pocket) and start the car, then exit quickly, it shuts off. I think the key needs to stay in the car for 3-5 seconds after it starts, otherwise it does some kind of check and shuts down. This is using the regular starter button, nothing to do with the new system or remote. It was a surprise the first time but now that I know about it, it's not an issue. Just make sure not to hop right out, or start the car with the key in the cupholder is easy too.
