Low power steering fluid 2008 GL450

When I first start the car (or when it's cold) it makes a whining noise in general and when I turn the wheels. Once it gets warmed up though, it's fine. i checked the level of the power steering fluid and it was a minimum when i first took out the dipstick, but when i wiped it and put it back in there was nothing on the dipstick when i took it back out. I had the power steering pump replaced about a year ago, and the dealership said my hoses looked fine. Anybody know what could be the issue? I took it to the dealership about two weeks ago. Does this tend to happen- the power steering fluid running low?

don't know much about cars so any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Possibly the dealer didn't get the system 100% filled when the pumped was replaced. Achieving 100% fill is somewhat tedious because the steering wheel needs to be turned from lock to lock quite a number of times. They may have short-cutted this. Now after some time, all of the fluid has worked into the system and the reservoir is low. Fill it to the right level, and keep and eye on it.

Do you have any leaks below the vehicle, or in the engine bay?

Is there an evident leak?

I had this recently, and it was the reservoir o-ring. First shop didn't catch it, but just re-filled (no charge!). I finally noticed the leak down the side of the block, and took it to shop #2 to repair. All happy now!

No evidence of a leak. When I back out of my garage there are no drips. I recently took it to the dealer for an oil change and they didn't notice anything either.....

I would fill it up properly check it both hot and cold for a couple of days till you're sure it is at the proper level and it should be fine unless there is a leak.

You’re low on power steering fluid...why.
two reasons for that could be
1.underfilling when replacing the pump.
2.leak at reservoir or from o-ring.

fill it back up and see if there’s a loss of fluid over time. If there’s a leak it is most often felt at the bottom of the reservoir, where it sits on the pump. The o-ring hardens and loses its flexibility.

it costs about $3.50 to replace it yourself.

Yeah i filled it up yesterday, now we wait. Hopefully it's not a leak and everything will be ok. hope it's just the o-ring.....

Did you turn your steering wheel from lock to lock about 20 times? The service procedure for filling the steering system includes a relatively high number of lock to lock turns. Not sure if 20 is the specified number, but it's close.
