w164 300cdi offroad
Hello,

last week I have been looking to buy oil for transfer and both diffs of an w164 300cdi offroad, for the transfer they sold me 236.14, instead of the 236.12 that appears on the MB 231.1 sheet, arguing that cause the car is offroad, its 236.14 the one that suits it, both .12 n .14 are almost the same product, they share equivalences, so I presume its ok.

but for the in the dealer the sold me MB 239.71,,, when i look in https://operatingfluids.mercedes-ben...et/231.1%20/en it says this 239.71 is for diferent cars... and that I should use MB 235.15 I have asked the dealer about this, but they have not answered nothing yet.

do you know if there is a proper susbtitute for MB 235.15? or does anybody now the specs of the MB 235.15???? I just find unbelievable that Mercedes uses a so special diff locking mechanism that theres only an oil in the world that suits it... theirs! ?¿?

sheers

I have found this one RAVENOL DGL SAE 75W-85 GL-5 LS , does anyone heard about this??

i have used redline 75w85. Gl5. It used to say on back 235.15. Maybe check it still says the same. Way cheaper than mb. Interesting they changed transfer case to what I assume is the atf for newer 722.9 transmission

You can use the redline for the front diff. Tree bottles should give you enough for changing both. Make sure you put the right amount in the front. I filled it to fill hole and it was too much. It spray diff fluid out while driving. Manual says 600ml or something. You can put 1.2L in if you fill to the fill hole.

Ravenol oil

I was hoping there is another oil I can put in it, I have drained the old oil into a clear container and it is fairly dark (maybe Stout not Beer if that makes sense), the oil is still not cloudy - just dark.

I strained the oil through a white tee shirt and no debris found, also put a magnet in the fluid and nothing to note - before I strained it (I wonder why they didn't out a magnetic plug on it)

The car has done only 130,000km

I have an acquaintance who is a merc mechanic and he says there is no official MB service interval on the diff fluid - does anyone know of one?

I was hoping someone can help where to find it (other than from stealers) or even if there is a point to changing it

There is no problem with oil for front (or rear non locking) diffs, just this electrically locking one

Trying to find out if it is Merc just being uptight about it or there is a reason for the "rare" fluid

I will put the old fluid back in temporarily ( used clean containers) so car is mobile but easy to change if needed
Ravenol do a 235.15 approved oil available from Ravenol.com.au. Cheers
