Should I replace Engine in 2008 GL450

I own a 2008 Gl-450 Mercedes. I had 285,000 miles when the engine failed. My wife still loves the car and we have a decision. My mechanic can put an engine in that has 85,000 miles on it including parts (Gaskets, Fluids, essentials - for $5,833 with a 1 year warranty, Is it worth going this route? We will probably drive it another 200,000 miles.

You may want to look into a later 2008 550 engine if you are going to the trouble. That seems high for a used 450 engine with installation. I assume the balance shaft issue got it? Did you have any symptoms prior to failure? I've got over 250k on my 2007.

The engine ran great and all off a sudden my drive had oil. I looked under the car and had a puddle of oil dripping in the back. I just had an oil change a few days prior. I saw a trail to my car. An oil check showed empty. Upon further examination by my mechanic he found anti-freeze in the puddles. It made sense as I had an the antifreeze low light warning every 4-5 months. He found a cracked block. We decided to get rid of the car because at 285,000 miles even if the engine was replaced next will be the 4-matic - or transmission or muffler. The tans fluid was never changed that I can remember - still same muffler - Original Battery. I can't complain. The male ego wanted it to hit 500,000 on the odemeter....but the truth is when we kicked it around there are more expenses on the horizon so we are letting go. Thanks for your input. It was most appreciated.

I'm debating on doing an engine swap in mine. Though it runs perfectly now, I know it's a matter of time before the balance shaft issue rears its ugly head. The transmission had been surprisingly robust but I have done all the regular fluid changes. Such a shame MB sourced a bad set of components but an even worse shame they knew about it and didn't do a recall to fix the problem. Some were hit early and under warranty while.others lasted a long time.

I don't need to add any oil between oil changes and it still runs like a top and on regular gas to boot. Has been such a phenomenal car that I may just keep driving until it stops running. I've owned it since it was a mere two month old so there is some sentimental attachment.

$6000 on a repair. It is about how much your car is actually worth or more. In my opinion, the funds should be spent toward another lower mileage GL. maybe even a newer one. like everyone else said, other issues will come about at these mileage.

Now just one GL450 with EORP.
1.Get a lower mileage ‘08+ 450
2. use your current car as a parts car.
3. $&@&????
4. =PROFIT
