Lost the only key...
So...wife tells me that the key to one of our GLs has been missing for a week and she has no idea where it is after an exhaustive search. At this point I have to assume it is lost (and will only be found or magically reappear just after a replacement is ordered/arrives).
My hunch is that our extremely rambunctious toddler boy has chucked it in the woods somewhere, which he’s done before. It’s gone.
i have a Das system with developer mode.
what are my options to get a new key?
yes, a duplicate is also in order for both of my GLs...we’ve gone three years with only a single key per vehicle and it’s finally bit us.

Well max you have a couple of options. First change wifes. That may be cheaper that the replacement key. Other than that, having DAS WDSFY. Option two buy a doggy transport cage and place your son in the cage. If he tries to throw things out the window, well that wont happen because he is caged.

I dont think you can do anything besides sync the key to the car in developer mode. It has to already be programmed for your car to do this. Abrites w/AVDI or VVDI has a Mercedes key programmer but its $2k.
I think a locksmith or dealership is the logical only way if you have no other key to clone from.

Depending on your Year - could be DAS3 key (programmed key only) or DAS4 (programmed key with DAS matching)
Either way it starts with a Dealer Key who orders programmed from MB - good news is it comes in quick - when you order the key they will tell you if it's DAS4 and needs to be matched.
I don't know how to get around that..

I grew up with a guy who wound up being a treasure finder/retriever, he goes out to crazy places where people have lost things like wedding rings, etc., I was amazed to find he makes a good living at that and stays busy. You could call one of those guys and see what they'd charge. Just an idea! Other than that I would order a new key from a stealership. I wonder what they charge for one! They used to be around $100 for a W124 but that was many years ago!!

$400 to $800 depending on the dealership, keyless go, and if they charge labor to "code" the key. Mine tried to charge me labor for a non keyless go key. I was highly annoyed about the money grab since it requires nothing of them for it to work. Keyless go key is a bit different though and does require programming.

Wow, what robbery. At those prices I would call all the dealerships within a certain mile radius and see if one is a few hundred dollars less that the others! It's possible. Back when a key cost $150 I thought that was a lot.

OK, so I have a funny story about a lost key...humor me, since there's nothing funny about those price quotes.
I used to have an E36 M3, and my (first) wife took the car one day and met a female colleague for lunch. When they came out of the restaurant, she had the keychain, but the key was missing. They looked all over the parking lot, retraced their steps, etc but weren't able to find the key. The colleague brought the wife home and we then drove out to get the car with the spare key. About a year later, we go over to the colleague's house for dinner and she laughs and says I'm not going to believe it, but she was cleaning out her purse and found the key to my car in the bottom. It had somehow fallen off the keychain into her purse.
Anyway, fingers crossed yours turns up sooner.

$355 and two days via the nearest MB dealer, we have a new key. Non keyless go btw and no extraneous “programming” or adaptation offered.
the old one will turn up any day now.
