Found oil inside Camshaft solenoid connectors
I've recently discovered some oil around Camshaft solenoid and position sensors. As part of the preventive maintenance, I've decided to replace o-rings around the sensors. However, while doing the job today I've discovered oil inside each of the solenoid connectors. After searching the net, it's a very common issue for these solenoids and if left untreated it can cause serious issues. If enough oil gets into the connector, it will travel along the wires into the main harness and then down the harness to sensors/computers connected at the other end. When that happens, sensors and computers can get damaged and it's very expensive to repair. Mercedes knows about the issue and there is an active campaign to install a small pig-tails harness (A 271 150 01 56 05) between the solenoid and the main harness. This additional harness blocks oil propagation into the main harness.
I looked at my service records and apparently dealer did this campaign for me back in 2012 and I have additional small harnesses installed. Now. I just need to replace the solenoids themselves since replacing the o-ring wont fix the issue. It's an internal seal failure.
Just be aware. I attached the campaign for your reference. It takes 1 minute to check if you have oil inside the connector. Just disconnect it and look inside. If you see oil, then replace the solenoid AND make sure you have small pig-tail harnesses installed. It's free if you go to a dealer.
