Question Any Better Transfer Case Oil then ATF?

I have no record of the transfer case oil changed in my GL450. I have also what sounds like a very slight chain rattle that disappears when you drive for about a minute.

I was going to change the oil and go from there to see if it silences the slight rattle. I have 116k miles currently on it.

But is there a better oil to use for the transfer case than ATF? While it works, I would think there is a better lubricant for that chain in there to keep the heat down and prevent it from stretching further.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

... you're thinking about using differential oil in your transfer case aren't you??
There is a great firum called "Bobstheoulguy" where you will find your answer well debated by a few knowledgeable folks.

Think about using a magnetic drain plug to help save you transfer case bearings.

Now just one GL450 with EORP.
Lol @ bobs rabbit hole. We’ll see you in six months after you’re done exploring that ****show.

If your chain is stretched enough, no oil will stop the rate of wear.

that being said, I’ve had my EORP case filled with D6 ATF since 150k and at 211k there’s just a slight delay, in stead of spectacular failure.
