Inexpensive alternative to replacing your stock head unit!

I have a 2012 GL450 and did some research on upgrading my stock radio. I really did not want to spend the money on a new head unit / display. My main goal was to be able to play my music or a music apps via bluetooth through the stock system. In my opinion, the stock Infinity system produces great audio! I purchased this:
Amazon Amazon
, a Bluetooth 5.0 AMI MMI adapter wireless media interface that works with the AUX function of the stock system. Just plug it into the glove box interface connector on your vehicle, link it to your smart phone bluetooth and your ready to "rock and roll"! Granted, you won't have any steering wheel controls but that's a small inconvenience for what you gain. The interface does not interfere with the stock head units ability to connect to your smart phone for phone calls, both will be connected at the same time. Calls can be received and the music will pause when speaking and resume after the call. Your phone will automatically connect when vehicle power is turned on. Best $20.00 bucks I have ever spent on a vehicle audio upgrade!

Another plus: The unit will shut off when power to the vehicle shuts off, no battery drain!

I used a similar device that connected to the 30 pin Apple connecter and it worked pretty well. One small annoyance is that it powers on when a door is opened, so if you're listening to something on bluetooth headphones around the house and someone opens the door to get something out of the car, the phone would connect to the car and whatever I was listening to would stop playing.

I use a similar device, just a different brand. For anyone reading this who has the NTG 2.0 Comand version in m.y. 2007-2008 (or was it also in 2009s?), it might be more challenging than just plug and play. For the NTG 2.5 Comand, it's very straight forward.

Thanks for posting. I have a 2010 GL550 and was looking for a better solution than having to plug my phone in everytime I want to stream music.

In my E350 I use a TP-Link HA-100 bluetooth adapter that plugs into the audio port in the glovebox and is powered by a USB car adapter. It powers on by itself and connects automatically, which is really nice. It was probably $20 when I bought it but for some reason the prices have really gone up. I think if we end up needing one in the GL I'm going to pick up one of those adapters you have, Jet Wrench. Thanks!

Your welcome Yup497, I know it's not for everyone. I like my music, but my hearing just can't pick out the nuances over the audio spectrum anymore (the older I get, the better I was!). I'm sure all the jet noise I was subjected to over my career didn't help either! I just can't justify spending big bucks on an aftermarket system when all I really need is the ability to use my phone music apps. Hope it works well for you too if you decide to go this route.

@2012gl450

I placed an order on Amazon for the Bluetooth audio.

The only other thing I've added to the sound in my GL550 was a powered JBL 12" sub. I didn't want big booming bass but I did want just a little more bass and it is perfect. I still have the factory headunit, HK speakers and the powered JBL 12 was a perfect fit.

I purchased it on Amazon and here's the specs. I paid $189 for it I'm 2019 and the price has increased quite a bit it appears.

So does this adapter display the track / song audio information such as the title and length CORRECTLY on the head unit? My Tune2Air adapter sounds very good, but I find that the song / track information displayed on the head unit lags behind the actual song so that eventually the tracks drift further and further out of sync. Perhaps a minor annoyance, but I would pay $22 if this unit kept its track information in sync properly.

Unfortunately, the unit does not display track information on the head unit.
