that is my understanding. That is why these supplemental (at least in Australia) can’t be flushed

Fortunately it is only the fluid in the fins and reservoir opposite the H block.

So, finally got a chance to take a close look at my radiator setup today, and it definitely does not have that transmission cooler. Furthermore, it does not have that large cooler on top of it, which I have no idea what it is for. Based on the size of the opening, it looks like it is an additional engine cooler. The A/C condensor is right behind the transmission cooler and that large cooler, followed by the main radiator behind that.

Looks like the first order of business will be to add the transmission cooler.

Edit: That big radiator in the front is the intercooler for diesel models, which makes sense. It also means there's plenty of space to add additional coolers if necessary.

When I was in high school my Dad was a GMC truck dealer … and this history makes clear to me that Mercedes is different than American iron … and that Americans are conditioned to think everything is an opinion. … because it is on merikun iron.

Your GL owners manual says go tow up to 7500 pounds. It contains no cautions or requirements for special equipment. … because none are necessary and none are available because your GL is ready to tow that 7500 pounds if you have the trailer hitch. You could tow that 7500 pounds all 4 years/50,000 miles of your original warranty and never hear anything from Mercedes that “you didn’t add a cooler” or something else equally ridiculous. The trailer hitch on my GL was dealer installed and there was no attempt to sell me any extras.

You will, btw, need to get electricity to that trailer the Mercedes way … no scotchloks, no “tapping in.”

merikun folk knowledge doesn’t apply to Mercedes.

Technically, you can tap in, and other people have done it in the past. You just lose out on a few features, like modified shift points, automatic disabled rear sensors, trailer light monitoring, and the best feature IMO, trailer sway control.

Also, it appears that if it didn't have the trailer package, it didn't have the secondary transmission cooler. There is the primary transmission cooler that is part of the main radiator, but the secondary one is an add on that probably only comes with the trailer package. Or maybe it was standard on X164 models but not W251 and W164.
