Removing steering wheel

Removing steering wheel
I am going to change the steering wheel on a 2008 (pre facelift) gl. The old one has bad sun damage.

To save having airbag light issues I was going to disconnect the main battery but just wondering if I have to disconnect the auxiliary battery too.

Am I right in thinking I could disconnect the auxiliary battery by disconnecting the small earth wire connecting to the big earth of main battery?

I don't know if you "need" to disconnect the aux (probably not?), but it certainly can't hurt. Besides, it only takes a second or two to reach in and slide off the ground connector on the aux battery. There's no downside to doing this.

I pulled the steering wheel a bunch of times. Never disconnected the battery first.

That is interesting. I thought I had heard of people getting airbag light from that.

wonder if it depends on how long the car has had key out

I think you misunderstood what I wrote... I said to slide off the connector on the AUX battery to disable the AUX battery.

To just disconnect the two batteries, you don't need to remove the main battery or the seat. That's why I said "reach in"

It'll work - been there done that a number of times. Pinch the female connector with your fingers to slide it off the spade connector.

Speaking of airbags. These were the years that some x164 had the Takata bags. Read up on why you don’t want one of those. I don’t think there was any rhyme or reason as to which did and which did not, but if this requires an airbag swap I would not substitute a non- Takata airbag for a Takata Face Blaster 2000 to facilitate a steering wheel swap. Iirc Takata were legally obligated to replace all of their defective airbags but had yet as of 2019 to publish a replacement schedule for x164.

Dunno. All I know is, if the SRS error came on, it self cleared shortly.

that is great news. Only done early BMW stuff before and when it came on it was on till cleared with scanner
