What tyres are you all using ?

I have 20" AMG alloys on my 2008 GL420 here in the UK , I have been running Nokian tyres on it for three or more years.
I have noticed for quite a while there is a particular droning noise at certain speeds, my independant mentioned he thought it was tyre noise.
Do you remember early Landrovers had a particular tyre noise when you could hear them coming down the road? , I am not saying mine are anywhere as noisy as that but I will be looking to change the tyres in the New Year so wonder what everyone else is using and what the noise levels might be like.

You do sorta drive on the wrong side of the road which may be contributing to a lot of the road noise you’re hearing.

In all seriousness, this might be better solved regionally taking advice from fellow brits because the road conditions and available tires might be specific to your market. I’m in the US, I have concrete highways with expansion joints in some parts of my state but asphalt in most, gravel on the rest. It rains a lot, like in blighty.

I run Goodyear Wranglers on stock 18”s and they have good on road manners, are quiet on road and give decent off-road traction.

If you choose to stick with your 20s and go with a cheap brand don’t expect much of a service life.

Thanks for the reply, haha,
I am hoping some Brits will contribute their thoughts. We have very little sectional concrete roads here but there is a large section on a motorwat ( M25 ) not too far from me and all tyres sound awful on it haha.
I had good year Wranglers on a previous Grand Cherokee Overland.

I have around 3,000 miles on my Pirelli Scorpions. They seem to be smooth, quiet. and grippy. I cannot comment on longevity yet but I like them a lot. I usually use All Terrains like the KO2s and DuraTracs so these street-oriented tires are my first in a while.

Yokohama geolanders are good

I have some slightly oversized geolanders (will check) on my GL420 and they are amazing, I drove past (helping some out) loads of stranded people in the recent snow in the UK and up our steep drive that the 4wd Tesla couldn’t manage at all without even feeling the traction cut in and drag a 3.5ton trailer up a steep muddy field and will also do 120mph quietly.

They have probably done 10k miles but look pretty new so wear is great.

Sadly I just bought a GL63 AMG yesterday as it’s deemed more socially acceptable by the ULEZ buggers and am looking for suitable tyres for 295/40r21 wheels for it which will cope with speed and snow and mud particularly since AMG doesn’t have such good off-road and no locking diffs.

If you’re interested I am selling the 420 and could sell the tyres and wheels, have a spare set of wheels for 420 and also got a nearly new of 21” wheels for AMG.

I put Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV on my 20 inch rims and am very impressed with smoothness, low road noise and in particular wet weather grip. Better than the previous sets of Continentals Super Contact 5s I had. Can't comment as to wear and distance yet, but I've had them for 12 months and wouldn't hesitate to do them again. Pricey but worth it

Do you mind me asking which Nokians you were using? Chances are they may not be available in my Canadian market, but I'm curious. Thanks!

I will check tomorrow as I cant remember the specific name right now. I have been using Nokian Winter tyres on two other vehicles for about 10 years or so and been really pleased with them over the years.
I am puzzled by the noise issue on the merc GL, there is also a similar noise from the winter wheel and tyres at the moment so I am leaning now towards it being a drivetrain noise instead of a tyre noise.

Goodyear Wranglers with Kevlar(tm)

They are surprisingly quiet, offer a really good traction on and off road. They also didn’t explode at 130 miles an hour so that was nice.

You can eliminate the speed restriction in Variant Coding, to test them at >130.

I have a separate set of winter Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV not studed. I'm running an unconventional size 255/55R19 on purpose. That's the smallest I'd run on this beast and I think that's pushing the limit. The tires have been good over 2 years/5-6k kms and while noisier than my all seasons, which is expected, I find that noise acceptable tradeoff for the traction they provide. I wouldn't call them excessively noisy though.

Have you checked wheel bearings?

These tires look like they would start getting noisy as they wear down. Some tires start "chipring" in the driver's ear at about the halfway mark that it's time to look for new shoes for mamma.

That is very interesting thank you, the last time it was in for service I asked them about the wheel bearings and they said they were fine, they also mentioned it may be down to the tyres.

it usually is, and then cheaper to replace than the four wheel bearings. Worn and noisy tires mask a lot of other things going on.

The type of Nokian tire you are using is critically important. Sport tire or snow tire? Drastically different sounds. As any tire wears, it will get louder. Also, low profile tires (30, 35, 40, 45p ratio) will transmit more noise than taller tires (55, 60, 65 ratio). Lastly, a high treadwear rating tire (450+) will be louder than a low treadwear performance tire (~200)

Thanks for the reply, I am running the summer Nokian tyres and on my winter wheels I have the winter Nokian tyres, I have been using winter Nokians for 10 years on my previous vehicles , the summer nokians are the first time I have tried them, they have been on the 4x4 summer wheels for maybe 3 years or a bit more, I have always been pleased how long previously they have lasted.
I shall be changing the summer tyres in a couple of months when I put the summer wheels back on the GL.
I appreciate you saying as they wear down they get noisier so I think that may be the reason .

I am a huge fan of Michelin Cross Climate tires. I bought my 08 GL 450 and the previous owner had the Michelins installed right before selling. I’ve put almost 30K on the tires and they are excellent in all conditions. I see there is a Cross Climate 2 out now, I do not have any feedback on them, but am interested if anyone has them and what their thoughts are.
