Keyless Go location?

Can anyone tell me where the keyless go module is located? Mine doesn’t work so I bought a replacement on eBay. I just don’t know where it is to swap it out.

I have a 2012 GL550.

Thx

If you are going to be doing things like swapping modules, you really ought to have WIS. You can get a copy for just a few bucks, and a few hours of your time, and about a hundred gigabytes of storage, on Ebay.

If you post your VIN, I'll plug it in to my WIS and see what it has to say about Keyless Go.

Thanks Eric. I saw an earlier thread with the same question and there was this image but it’s very vague about exactly where it is.

My vin is: 4JGBF8GE1CA779667

Thx

Unfortunately, the module location page insists on showing three different models. I believe yours is the top one.

Thanks for this picture! Is it difficult to remove the cover to access the area? Looks intimidating. Thx

Lift out the armrest / cupholder. It will be a destructive operation, but since when have you cared about third row passenger comfort.

Are you saying it has to be damaged to remove it?

You can glue - or just set - it back in, but the snaps that hold it on typically break off.

People take them off to change the rear shocks without disassembling the interior.

Yes, that’s the cheat method.
the book method is to remove the interior. It’s a bit fiddly but there is another nondestructive cheat - it’s easy to get them flexed far enough forwards to gain access to these modules. Just work from back to front wrt bolt removal and when you have access, stop. in all actuality, the tricky part is getting the second row seat belts, and their mounts out from behind the interior panels.

otherwise, rip the armrest off. Roll the dice on your hot glue gun repair holding up.

Ok. Thanks for all the information. I’m going to tackle this next week when the new (used) module comes in.

I tackled this job yesterday. It went easier than I imagined.
Take out 3 T30 Torx screws
Partially pull away weather stripping on rear side and also in right rear passenger side
Pull trim piece away from 3 clips in passenger doorway
Then from rear, carefully pull piece away from side towards middle of car until two trim panel retainers on rear of piece pop out.
At this point the piece is loose enough to wedge your hand inside to where the module is located.
Remove two retaining nuts on module, disconnect the 3 wire connectors and remove module.
It’s a little easier to reach in through fuse cover opening to remove the nuts and wires.
Installation is reverse.

The hardest part was fitting my hand behind the trim piece to release the wire connectors. My wrists were pretty scratched up from fiddling around in there. The antenna wire is long enough to move the module into an easier location to remove it so disconnect the other two first.

The dealer wanted $600 for the part and $300 labor to fix the keyless go. I bought the module for $100 on eBay and installed it myself saving $800. Sweet!

Thanks to the members here for helping with information and advice before I started. Hopefully my write up will help someone else.

The sweet feeling of success! Nicely done. There really isn't much mystery with doing your own maintenance on a Mercedes, except, some of the learning can only be done during the project as so few people include pictures. So thank you for that.
