I wouldn't think a high soot level code would kill the engine... maybe put it into limp mode? But I'm not sure. Disconnecting the sensor doesn't help - it will basically just tell the computer there's an issue. The fact, though, that the code won't clear means there's still problem. Doing a re-gen doesn't mean the cat is clear and good. Look into some way to see if you can figure out if the sensor is bad and/or maybe needing a new cat (or some type of electrical "code out").

You could have more than one thing going on - but get the DPF code figure out, first.

When it dies out, HOW does it die out? Stumbling like running out of fuel? Or more like turning a switch?

Absolutely you could more than 102K miles - but there's way too many variables about how it's been used and maintained to say.

I'd start by going through battery connections - at the battery and the engine - and look for ground straps. Make sure they're clean and tight.
