Right? It's a pretentious little pseudo walnut grain drawer, into which you are supposed to stuff ... what exactly?
The only thing I want to populate it with is switches to disable my rear lights, and activate the exhaust oil injection system.
Why not just order a new mechanism?

Apparently a big blank wouldn't look good, so we without off road package get a little storage cubby.

Then close it. Repeat when bored.
Something like Eeyore putting the popped balloon in the honey jar and taking it out again.
The drawer "should" stay closed, even with yoru stuff in it (obviously). Something is broken with the latching mechanism. Remove the drawer and inspect closely. You may find something going on that you can fix. It was years ago, but mine was doing the same thing and I did something to fix it... although I can't remember anymore what I did
Otherwise, remove the wood trim piece and replace the other part, then put your wood trim piece on the new drawer.

Ah I'm just being silly.
Perhaps I ought to keep my AAA (with 100 mile towing!) card in the slot. Needs to be very handy, y'know.
Or I will continue dreaming of installing 007 style evasive device switches in it. I already turned the CD changer into a covert storage unit, capable of concealing bad things such as a pistol.
