Yes, very successful. Compression was fine on the other 7 cylinders, otherwise i would have scrapped the engine. Now it runs like a champ, chipped an does almost 300kph.
The bushings in the intake manifold wear and fall out. You can see them at the 6. picture, the small white parts. After 100-150k miles i would think about swapping the manifold. Pierburg manufactures the Manifold for mercedes, aou can get it direct from them for cheaper.

Compression loss cylinder 1

I have 2012 gl550 with 60k miles. Cylinder one has some compression issues at idle. Runs a tiny bit rough at idle and clears up at any speed. There are no lights on dash. Also, no loss of oil even at 5k miles between oil changes. Any ideas as what could cause loss of some compression in cylinder one. Some days are better than others.

I had EXACTLY the same damage (S211 E550). Bent valve at cylinder 5, zero compression, rocker arm broken, marks on piston head. Your Motor ate his intake manifold, the plastics. Small parts crush your spark plug head, i had this bevor, big warning sign. Big parts get stuck at the valves, boom contact. I repaired it at home without a lift, difficult but doable. You need some special tools and elbow grease. I took a gamble und didn´t pull the piston. The cylinder walls were very good for 250k miles, some minor scratches. Now the car is running fine for 10k miles, full power no oil consumption. All in all a 1000$ repair, the intake manifold is 500$ alone.
If you wanna see pictures, i got many.
Yeah, I'm bumping an older thread. This just happened to me, except it was cylinder #2. The head of the valve broke off the stem and is wedged into the port sideways. Car has 275,000 miles on it, and I don't have a two-post lift, or time for another project. I'm shopping for a newer GL and will sell this one whole for parts, or scrap it if it doesn't sell.

A piece of plastic is rattling around by your intake valves. If it gets sucked in a valve could bend or break and the misfire will suddenly get much worse. Pull the intake manifold now, and if my hunch is correct replace it with new. They're available at the online parts retailers.
