Motor Oil & prices
I have used about 4 different brands of motor oil in my MB’s all MB 229.5 approved . I was wondering what prices per ounce everyone around the country has been using and paying. I have used both 0W-40 and 5W-40
Mobile 1 , Amsoil, Liqui Moly and Castrol Edge.
I have been using a lot of Amsoil in 3 of our MB’s but recently bought a bunch of 5W-40 Mobile 1 at $.13 per ounce $21for 5 Qrts and definitely the cheapest I have paid for 229.5 in quite a while. The current price for Amsoil is double that at $33.25 a gallon or $.26 per once…
I change all the vehicles at 5k miles so I can’t see the double of price being worth it .. especially when so found the 5qrts of Mobile for $21 per!
Any thoughts and what brands and pricing you have found ? We maintain 4-5 MB’s pretty all year round and really go thru the oil and tranny fluid (which I love Amsoil) ok thanks Bill

Mobile 1 Euro
As soon as I get my delivery I will post the bargain … if it is BS I will notify paypal and get my money back… but definitely one of those way to good to be true pricing . I bought 10x5 qrts so 50 quarts should last me a year or so… I guess if it is true I might buy another 10 ?

BMW SPEC LL-01
Have you noticed that the BMW SPEC LL-01 has been removed from the 0-40 but still on the 5W-40?
I quit using the 0-40 quite a few years ago just because my SL500 had some slight ticking at idle once it was up to temp but when I changed to 5-40 it has better oil pressure at idle and less noise.

oil specs
My two cents on where to spend the extra couple of bucks is with the transmission. I have changed at least 15 if not 20 complete tranny (7speeds) fluid changes and countless 5 speed.. the difference is unreal with a high quality fluid to a cheap ATF.

There are many posts by people about how "you got to use OEM parts" but, when it comes to fluids, suddenly Mercedes doesn't know what it's talking about. Sure, maybe MB recommends Mobil 1 because it has some arrangement with them. But, they aren't going to recommend using something that sets them up for warranty work and lawsuits. And a major quality oil brand isn't going to market an inadequate product. Sure, exotic brands may bring peace of mind. But they aren't providing much more. It reminds me of back in the day when I was into stereo equipment. The greater the frequency range, the better - and the higher the price. No matter that I can't hear it; I know it's there.

Great thoughts
You know, there's a sticker on my engine that recommends using Mobil 1. That's what I use.

Look at the shelf in any retail auto parts store and there are 5-10 flavors of Mobil 1 in several viscosities.

MB doesn't pump and refine oil, so whatever is in the MB branded bottle came from a motor oil producer (and probably the low bidder). When it comes to MB approvals, I'm not sure how oil producers go about acquiring approval, but it's likely that they pay for the testing and analysis at a lab approved by MB (or by MB itself). Some owners swear by Royal Purple that's priced about 30% higher than MB-229.5 approved brands (Mobil1, etc.), and Royal Purple carries no manufacturer approvals (so I've never bought the stuff). I do my own oil changes, keep meticulous records of what fluids I use, and sleep soundly at night.

If you want to enjoy Oil Wars, go spend some time on Bob Is The Oil Guy.
One thing: The oil passages are designed for a certain viscosity and viscosity range. If the oil is wrong viscosity, you will get more flow than expected in some passages and less flow in others. For a while I was using Mobil 1 10W-30, reasoning that in San Diego it was neither cold nor hot, but I thought better of this when I compared the viscosity at temperature, provided on the Mobil web site, with the 0W-40. You may not operate at 0W temperatures, but if the viscosity at 100C is different, that is what really counts - and with the oil heat exchanger, the oil is at coolant temperature pretty much all the time.
Now, the coolant temperature swings by 20C, so ...

I was just wondering if there was going to be a “choice” oil

Now if you really want to talk oil choices let’s start tranny fluid .. But Eric has been voted off the island discussing tranny fluids!! 😂

Viscosity & additives
I am sure most have heard that the first few minutes after startup on an engine is the most wear. I have been using an additive for years from an oil designer that started out doing designs for steel mills than race cars. He use to put his additive in a small honda engine run it then drain the oil out and run it for a demo to sale his additive. I accidentally demo it on my sons 4-wheel drive go cart with a 16hp Kohler when the drain pipe got tangled with the sled rope and drain the engine. I looked out to see a cherry red Kohler engine still flying around the yard. When we shutoff it off, it felt seized for 5 minutes. I called my oil design buddy and he said put oil in it and see if it will run . That Kohler ran for over a year and took lots of abuse.
Since startup is so hard on engines he made an additive that really coats the parts. Most of his product line has been associated with a large distributor Grainger.I always have a gallon on the shelf and out 1 oz to a quart . Before I talked my wife into driving MB’s she had a Cadillac that was under recall for undersize pistons at 50k miles.. when they pulled the engine apart I got a phone call asking what kind of oil to you use?? I thought here we go they are going to try and get out of this warranty work… nope they were amazed at the almost No Wear!!! Check out Renewable lubricants!

Stopped by Walmart today to grab a jug of oil for my '95 Jeep. A couple updates -- Royal Purple now has a Dexos approved 5W-30 (means nothing to MB owners), and Mobil1 now has 5 qt jugs of 0W-30 Euro ESP which is the MB 229.51 and 229.52 blend. Didn't note prices.
