I watched a few videos of the engine air filter change and feel very comfortable to do it myself. So I will drop in those two filters soon. On the dry run I see a few small splits in the ridged area of both air intake hoses. I will debate on replacing them or even heat shield wrapping them. Flex paint may get picked up by the oxygen sensor. Wrapping them in red might be nice to my eye.
The prescribed method is to top side suck the oil out, no need to put this car on a lift for an oil change.

three K using good oils is wicked overkill , five to seven K is more appropriate.

I suppose that's true as this weekend I should road trip about 1,400 miles to Virginia and back. So I could see Every 6K as the target range. I will let the shop that changes my oil to choose the method however I like the car on the lift as they allow me to get under there a look around.

Well that was a quick and pleasant year of ownership. A pair of used tires and an Air compressor replacement were the only must do items that were done. I did have a extra key fob made. Other than that gas, oil, oil and air filters, wiper blades plus lots of wax and tire shine. Coming intentions include, new head lights and a fog light bar, weathertec floor mats, sport foot pedals, a dash cam on the cosmetic side. Then on the mechanical side there will be suspension work to come.

Well next day, after a night of figuring my next few things I might treat Martha the Big GL450 to. Making a decision that I will make a tire size post as I want to move to 275/55 r20 tires, on the drive to work this morning a fairly hard stop at a red light resulted in abs lights and abs inoperative message. The blessing in that is I am glad to have this occur before any tire size change to rule that out as any possible cause. Arriving at work I parked and shut off and restarted the car and the inop abs message and abs lights remained on. I will she how it goes after work. The most I will do is check brake fluid level and look at the abs sensors for damaged wires. But I would like to have the shop put eyes on it with out any DIY attempts. I am in no rush with this truck as I plan to keep it a long time work it through any issues that come along. But we will see what it going on after an easy 600 mile trip last week end.

Nice progress with this car.

Did you replace ignition coils yet? Did you do a thorough inspection of the SAMs and rear taillamp gaskets for water infiltration?

No replacement of ignition coils yet in my year of ownership. A highly regarded shop went over car and found no water intrusion issues or visible sam unit issues but did remark about the front drivers headlight having missing dust covers..

So with this reading from the 2012 GL450 I will be driving a little to see if the lights reset. I suppose I will drive in the direction of the shop ☺️.

This cover shot of the 2012 GL450 owners manual made me smile as it is exactly the height my GlL 450 sits after parked 2 days. That being it's lowest height point I have witnessed as opposed to right after I gave parked it. We will see as the work continues.

The ABS and ESP lights stayed on after a drive to a Indie Mercedes shop I was intending to visit anyway. Nice knowledge talkative shop owner. But may not be the shop for my needs a little inconvenient to get to and from to drop of the car and a little to unpredictable work completion time. But in the conversation he said it would be a bad wheel sensor and (today is Tuesday) I should come by on Friday and he can scan it to find out which one. About 15 mins of more conversation. He said come by tomorrow sometime. A couple more regular customers stop by for this and that and they will be there some time tomorrow also. I like him and on occasion will stop by and chat with him and always keep a extra windshield wiper or signal light on the car in case he happens to not be busy. But I don't see my lower control arms being put on at this shop.
So I drove home armed on the street put me always ready plastic tarp on the ground and made a physical check of at the ABS sensors I found the right rear sensor with a broken wire at the plug-in to the harness but on the harness side. The wire from the sensor side is intact.
Tomorrow I will see if I can attach or jump the broken wire to confirm it as the issue.

Synthetic oils will chemically last over 250,000 miles before they start breaking down. 5k miles is soooo old school thinking. Most modern vehicles will last over 50,000 before needing a change. I change my filter more often than my oil.

While yes I am old at 60 plus years. I have adjusted over the years. I still not comfortable or at least not a fan of the lack of lubrication points on the car suspensions and certain life time fluid claims on cars. Will monitor and adjust my behavior as I go along.

No fluids are lifetime. This is a sham by manufacturers and dealers to accelerate vehicle end of life which results in another vehicle sale.

Suspension parts have been no-lube for 25 years. They are consumable throw away parts.

100% correct.

...but there is no need to change modern oils at 5000 mile intervals, its just "speedy lube" places marketing BS.

Nothing to dispute about what you posted. 25 years ago I was 40 and well driven. Today it is remarkable how much a can of spray lube can free up stiff hard riding suspension.

So I have been in the just clean it up pamper and drive it mode. I have spent only money necessary.
I replaced the A/C compressor which was bit expensive but with an above average triple digit summer in NYC it was a must do to insure the family comfort. Oil, filters and waxes 2 used tires and 4 valve cover caps and set of center caps of which I have used one, round out the remainder of upkeep money spent. Minor splurges to this point include a charging unit hub in the second seat row and several head rest tablet holders..... I almost forgot about the rear tow bar hitch step. That step get so many remarks as it matches the side running boards so well. It is also doing well to keep the rear bumper safer from tight parking rubs. So just over a year into this 2012 GL450, it has been pure pleasure and little drama for such a fine ride. I have a list of things I would like to do for it next spring if I nurse it through the winter season.
But I have went ahead a bought a full set of floor mats for the big girl after searching around for a used floor mat for the third row without success I spent 95.00 USD on a full set. I also installed interior courtesy lights in the foot area of the second a third row that I already had in the closet a nice touch I must say. I will likely repair a broken right rear speed sensor wire the next time I have the car on a lift. The broken wire is on the female side of the pigtail connector leading into the body harness. Martha motors on. 😎

I received the set of Toughpro rubber 1st, 2nd and 3rd row floor mats. I am happy with the fit. I used the 3rd, 2nd row as is and the front drivers mat under the original drivers mat. I left the original passenger mat in place. The passenger mat supplied by Toughpro was used to form the extra area under the 2nd row flip up seat.

Have you checked your rear taillamps for water intrusion? I searched this thread and it didn't come up. Common area of concern for this vehicle.

Too bad you’re not closer, I have a set of oem ones getting full of spider webs in the corner of my garage. Never use them, only the front two sets, never the third.
