2010 GL450 transmission fluid change

Hello,

For this vehicle the transmission fluid change is supposed to be done every 40k miles. I did the 40k miles, but haven't done it since then. Now I am at 120k miles so I went 80k miles over the limit. Im short on funds, is the transmission fluid change really necessary? Can I wait another 40k miles? or do you guys think Im already damaging the transmission? It obviously drives nice, but Im worried about the transmission.

You are definitely due for a service, its all up to you if you want to take the chance, is it going to break next week because you haven`t change the fluid, more than likely not but in the long term you will definitely have more chances for something to go wrong.
I understand being short on the funds, what I usually do for the expensive services, say for breaks, I do make a plan and time frame, then ie I buy the front rotors first, a month later the pads, another month the rear pads etc etc. Once I get all the parts in hand, then I do the job.

Noone can answer that question. It could go boom clunk tomorrow, or not for another ten years. It all depends on how the vehicle is used.

Whenever you have the fluid changed, do so at a reputable place. Because there is no dipstick, the fluid refill is a complicated procedure. I abused my transmission, getting a complete fluid flush at 90k miles, and then a fluid change at 120k miles, both at not exactly bad shops, but not official Mercedes technician levels. 9k miles later, boom clunk. Which of my abuses was the cause? No one can say. Thus the advice is simple: Gather your cash, go get the fluid and filter changed, and drive the vehicle gently from here on out. In the meantime, monitor the transmission for trouble codes.

thanks for the advice, I remember like 5 years ago I heard a “thump” but it was strangely at only
one place near my house. And it only happened once a day at night time when I would come back from work. But from that time I never heard of it again. But you are right I need to get it done.

If its gonna break in a month it will break in a month, because the damage was done already, at that point changing the fluid would not make a difference.
Like Eric said, it might break next week or it would go another 10 years, yeah another month should not be too bad and like he said just baby it, thats the common sense anyway.
I dont know your skill level or if you have a place to do the job yourself, I do the transmission service myself past 20 some years, last time I`ve changed the fluid on this car, fluid, filter, gasket, overflow plastic piece and screws were just about $220
P.S. just checked in FCP`s website, their 722.9 Late blue fluid kit is $197, which is a really good deal with all OEM materials.
Good luck.

I understand. The thing is it’s my father’s vehicle and I actually drove a 2017 honda civic, but my father passed away a few years ago. I had to give my younger brother the civic since he was going to college and he cant drive a big mercedes suv around. but I left for my mom’s house for personal reasons and now I live in a shelter with a Mercedes🤣. So I want to save up for my own place, but I also don't want to break my only mode of transportation. So basically, I make payments on the honda and in turn my mom gave me the mercedes. So Im not in a good situation lol. Any advice? Sorry to trauma dump. Oh and by the way, I am not handy I always take the benz to a service place.
