OE Tuning - 500HP - group buy??
Hi fellow current and soon to be GL450 / GL550 owners -
Who would join me in requesting a group buy discount from OE Tuning on the ECU tune?
Maybe if we show our interest they would do something for us a group - respond below! Pass the word around so we see what the interest would be.
Currently OE Tune is offering the tune on our 2013 GL450/550 for $955 (20% off) through January 4th.
They have confirmed that the tune for the GL450 will give 500hp and 580 lb-ft! And from everything I've read they are a quality outfit that have great customer service.
How about something to lock up this market OE Tuning?

If you believe their own hype - note the lack of documented backup to their claim.
My opinion its too early in the game to get the best tune - that will be 6 months to 1 yr out after the Euro guys gets a chance to whack at it for awhile.

The one thing that concerns me the most that you may be able to help me with - what are the differences between the GL550 and 450 in considering whether the 450 could take the additional power/tq? Suspension / brakes etc. thx.

They have told me they'll have dyno charts in a week. I think there numbers are based on the S550/E550 mapping - do you think that is a reasonable proxy?

I would propose to you that a professional tuner would have legitimate independent certified dyno's at time the tune was launched - don't you ?
And frankly, anyone can mock up a representation of a self-done dyno.
All I am saying before you ECU tune a $80K twin turbo Benz - you are best to wait about a year.
The forum members here aren't Mopar owners looking for chrome accessories....

Thanks for the advice. Which European tuners should I keep my eye on?
You're right in anyone can mock up a chart - I guess if a company wanted to stay in business they wouldn't. Is there something you're not letting on I need to know about OE Tuning - or just speculating?
Oh - and I'm actually Ford guy. Although I have seen you not shoot down chrome MB parts inquiries on other sites.
Back to my general question - any key differences between the 450 and 550 that should be considered before going for a power upgrade (regardless of source)?
Thx.

Look, it's the same engine as the s550 and e550, there may be a few other mapping this based on a different transmission i imagine, but I've had the tune on there for about 2-3 weeks with no problems. Go ahead and go with the Euro tuners if you like, you can get it tuned by Renntech for $2700 and they aren't strengthening anything. The vehicle can tow 7500 pounds, you think it's not reinforced to be able to do that? My .02.

Anyone is free to do as they wish
Anyone is free to do what they wish to do... if you're considering a tune, then the advantages of waiting as I sugges:
1) For the development of a tested and documented tune which has been adjusted for use with the GL chassis and 7G+ 4matic transmission - I could give a hoot over generic tunes for the S550/E550 non-4matic sedans
2) pricing in the $400-$600 range.
Right now is way too soon, and WAY too much over-hype - fine for those that pride themselves as 1st adopters - but for those owners who are considering a tune and are considering long term ownership of their Mercedes - too soon !

As you can tell, quite a few are pending delivery based on delays.
Let me know and I'll update the title of the thread if I can.

Some tuners release their product at discount and/or free to owners that agree to get out into the forums, and to be fair even good tuners take a occasional forum beating from their competitors mocked up as forum members.
If you are looking to mod your $80K new Mercedes - why doesn't anyone do at least a full forum search here, and/or a general google on "problems" reported about the vendor ?
Heaven forbid GL/ML owners in their search for snake oil fall down into the morass with these the M5 and M6 guys did.
How about this on the CLS63 tune from December on this very forum: "Yes I have OE tune I am going back to stock because I don't want to have more problem to come up. I want to enjoy driving my car and not to worry about CEL's or anything to happen I couldn't take the car to dealer to fix it under warranty."
Exactly who is working for who on this "proposed group buy" ?
Then this will all come up again, when the "dyno" is posted with supposed blue lines on a graph.....

I can tell you that I'm seriously considering the OE Tune and honestly thought there may be others in a similar position that if we got together we could get a better price. I've seen it work on other forums where people with similar interests in a product have gotten themselves a good deal. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
I think we've all duly noted your concerns at this stage.
I would like to know which Euro tuners you suggest I keep an eye on - seriously.
I did do some forum searching on SpeedTuning and seemed there were some unhappy customers out there. Seems that can be said for many outfits.
I'm pretty skeptical myself and am waiting to see some dyno numbers.
