$3k Discount on GL450, is it possible?
Hey guys,
New here and currently looking to get a new GL450 soon. I've been talking with various dealers and so far have wiggled them down to a $2k discount. I was wondering has anyone gotten a larger discount on the '13 model without a fleet or USAA account?

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Got close to that and and amazing guaranteed price on the trade when we ordered a GL350 in October for December delivery.

A lot depends are where you are located... you might be a bit more forthcoming on that and maybe there could be more focused advice.. for this month you have have a 48hr window on what is in inventory..

I am in the DFW area too. I don't think you will get anything from Park place or MB Plano. I ordered a 2014 GL63 and a 2014 S Class from MB of Georgetown - 180 miles away. If you are interested I can PM you the name of my sales associate. He is very good and may be worth asking him. I don't mind driving 3 hours to get a better price than to get a car at MSRP from DFW MB dealerships.
Thanks

I've been mainly dealing with the Houston dealers, seems there are more selections and they are more eager to deal.
I didn't think of looking in Georgetown, I did think of Austin but decided against them because of their poor customer service ratings. Please PM your contact at Georgetown as well as the deal you are getting.

They really didn't want to give me a penny off MSRP in addition to the tint, 3yrs of service and USAA and I had to literally tell them I wasn't doing the deal and give me my deposit back because I was walking out the door for them to do the deal.
When you go on USAAs website (assuming you are a member) it gives you a target price that you should pay for vehicle and then takes an additional $3K off. Well it turns out that all the dealer is really obligated to give you is $3K off and anything more you have to negotiate. MB Plano will give you whatever the target price is including the $3K off with no questions asked and that is how I also bought my CLS63 and I had to threaten Park Place if they didn't honor that price then I would just go back to MB Plano and order it from them. Every thing with PP has been great (service way better than Plano) except the last part of negotiating the final deal.

In theory invoice price is the price the dealer pays to the manufacture, so MSRP/sticker - invoice = prebuilt profit for the dealer. Invoice can be as little as 5% below sticker, or in some makes it's close to 15%.
It is often a negotiation tactic used in the US, for consumers to argue to pay invoice price plus or minus a few hundred more as a reasonable price.

Incoice : What Dealers Pay to Manufacturers
MSRP : The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price and yes its the price dealers want to sell the car to you.
Most of the time MSRP > Invoice. Normally they say add 3% to invoice (Dealers also need to make money) and start the bargaining process. But all depend on the availability of the car (For GL you know the bad news).

Picking up mine this week. I'm in NJ. I paid $2k over invoice. I found someone else that told me they would do $1700 over invoice but they couldn't find the packages I wanted. The p2 package and diamond white metallic combo seems very hard to find in my area. If you are more flexible with what you want and what they have in inventory you have a better chance. It appears that while inventory is a lot better than it used to be, these are still selling incredibly well and you have to move fast, be flexible or order a 14.
I usually only deal by phone. Get the internet salesperson on the phone. Tell them if they quote you a great price on the phone and find the car with the packages you want, you will come in that day to do the deal. Do your homework in advance so you know what you absolutely need and where you can be flexible. Know the options. Know the prices (invoice vs msrp). This way they will know you are an educated buyer. Be ready to make a purchase and be willing to let them make a little profit. This is all my opinion.
I have found that in my area that all equates to $1700-$2000 over invoice. You might find better as the model year winds down if the dealer still has any left but then you have to be willing to settle on what (if any) they have left. This logic does not include any special discounts like Fleet, USAA, etc. My understanding is that a dealer does not have to give you (and probably won't) discounts on top of Fleet/USAA but it appears that some here have managed to get both a negotiated discount PLUS Fleet/USAA. If you can do that, then that's the golden ticket.
Last thing I would say is to get the best deals, be willing to expand your search outside of a small radius. Be willing to go to a larger dealer in a big city that has higher volume sales and therefore bigger allocations and possible inventory or trucks inbound to them.
Good luck.
